CHAPTER THREE — LINES BLURRING

1418 Words
Maya woke up before her alarm. Her eyes snapped open in the dim morning light, heart beating faster than it should. It wasn’t fear exactly more like anticipation. Or maybe something she didn’t want to name yet. She lay there staring at the ceiling, replaying yesterday in her mind. Adrian’s voice. His eyes. His presence. The way he had said Exposure. To me. The way he had smirked, slow and knowing, as if he enjoyed the effect he had on her. And the worst part? She had felt it. Every glance. Every moment. Every breath passing between them. Stop, she muttered into her pillow. “He’s your boss. He’s a billionaire. he’s not for you.” But her mind didn’t listen. She was in trouble, and she knew it. By the time she got ready and arrived at the building, she’d repeated a silent promise to herself a dozen times: Be professional. Be focused. Keep your distance. She stepped out of the elevator and froze immediately. Because he was already looking at her. Adrian stood in the hallway near his office, sleeves rolled up, talking to a tall man in a navy suit. But the moment Maya appeared, his eyes slid to her, sharp and immediate—as if he’d sensed her presence before seeing her. The man he was speaking to followed his gaze and turned. New assistant? The man asked, smirking. Adrian didn’t look away from her. Yes. He didn’t use her name, but somehow, the single word sent heat rushing to her cheeks. Good morning, Mr. Cole, Maya managed, hoping her voice sounded steady. Morning, he replied, gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary. Wait inside. She obeyed quickly, escaping the intensity that made her stomach tighten. She stepped into the office, placing her bag on the side table, inhaling deeply. She needed to calm down. She was a professional, damn it. She flipped open her tablet and began reviewing the schedule. Twenty seconds later the door opened behind her. Adrian entered, silent as always, but she felt him like the shift of air before a storm. That was Daniel Hart, he said, removing his jacket and hanging it. Executive director. Oh. She turned. He seemed friendly. He’s nosy, Adrian said shortly. He likes knowing everything happening on this floor. Don’t let him corner you. Her eyebrows rose. Corner me? Adrian looked at herslow, deliberate. You’re new, he said. And you attract attention. The words sent a faint shiver down her spine. Attract attention? She echoed. How? He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he walked toward her, stopping only a short distance away. Too close. Always too close. People notice new hires, he finally said. People notice… unexpected hires. Unexpected? He studied her face, eyes moving over her features quietly, intensely. You’re not like the other candidates who usually walk in here expecting this job, he said. You stand out. Her heartbeat quickened. Is that… a good thing? His eyes lowered to her mouth for a brief, dangerous second. It is for me, he said quietly. Not for office gossip. Maya swallowed. He was being too honest this morning. Too direct. She looked away first. Right, she said, clearing her throat. I'll be careful. He nodded once, satisfied. But as he walked to his desk, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something… unspoken had just passed between them. The Day Begins For the first few hours, everything went smoothly. Maya scheduled meetings, filtered emails, and sorted tasks at impressive speed. Adrian dictated notes, approved contracts, and occasionally gave her a nod of quiet approval that sent butterflies spiraling through her stomach. And their gazes kept meeting. She’d look up from her screen and he’d already be watching her. Not in a predatory way. Not in a sleazy way. But in a way that made her feel seen. Noticed. As if he were trying to figure her out piece by piece. At one point, while she handed him a folder, their fingers brushed. Not a dramatic touch. Not a lingering one. Just… contact. But the jolt it sent up her arm made her freeze. So did he. For a single moment, their eyes locked closer than they’d ever been, breath nearly mixing. Then he cleared his throat and looked away. Thank you, he said, voice slightly lower. You can… place the rest on the desk. She nodded quickly and stepped back. It’s fine, she told herself. Just an accident. Just a touch. Except it didn’t feel accidental. And Adrian’s expression wasn’t unaffected. Lunch Tension Around noon, Claire entered the office holding a stack of printed documents. Investor's portfolio, she said, handing them to Adrian. And… Mr. Hart said he wants to speak with Maya later. Adrian’s jaw tightened. Why? Something about orientation and onboarding. Send someone else, Adrian said immediately. Claire’s eyebrows rose. She is already onboarded. Then he has nothing to discuss with her. Claire hesitated. Maya blinked. That was… weirdly protective. Or possessive. Or No, she needed to stop assuming things. I’ll let him know, claire said slowly, leaving the office. Adrian didn’t move for a moment. Then he looked up at Maya, expression unreadable. You don’t need to talk to him, he said. I… didn’t mind, she offered. I did. His tone wasn’t harsh. Just final. And Maya felt something twist inside her chest. Okay, she said quietly. He nodded and went back to his documents, but tension lingered in the air like smoke. A few minutes later, Adrian said: You haven’t eaten. Maya blinked. What? You haven’t taken a break, he clarified without looking up. You’ve been working for five hours straight. Oh I was just focusing. You need to eat. She hesitated. I brought something. He finally lifted his gaze. Good, he said softly. Eat here. She froze. Here? Yes. Do… you want me to stay and work? No. His eyes softened. I want you to rest. She felt warmth rise in her chest. O-okay. She took out her simple lunch rice and vegetables in a small container and sat at her workstation, trying not to feel self-conscious. But Adrian… kept glancing at her. Not rudely. Not judgmentally. But almost as if he was checking if she was okay. Finally, she couldn’t help it. Why are you looking at me like that? she asked. He blinked, startled by her directness. For a lot of reasons, he said honestly. Her breath hitched. Then he added, more lightly: You eat very quietly. She stared at him, unsure whether to laugh or blush. He smirked not quite a smile, but close. She looked away quickly. She was falling deeper. This man was pulling her in without even trying. An Unexpected Emergency The peaceful moment was interrupted by a sharp knock. Adrian’s expression tensed immediately. Come in. A frantic junior manager rushed in, nearly breathless. Mr. Cole we have a problem. The new partnership contract with ValorTech… it’s been compromised. Adrian stood up instantly, voice dropping into that cold, commanding tone Maya was still getting used to. Explain. They leaked sensitive numbers. The deal might collapse today. Adrian swore under his breath and grabbed his laptop. Who was responsible? We’re not sure but the investors want answers in the next hour. Maya’s heart raced. She stayed silent, watching him transform from subtly warm to pure CEO dominance in seconds. Call a meeting, Adrian said. Ten minutes. Conference Room One. And get legal. The manager nodded and ran out. Adrian exhaled sharply and turned to Maya. I need you with me, he said. Me? Yes. Bring my notes and the ValorTech documents. She grabbed everything instantly, following him out the door. The conference room buzzed with panic executives whispering, papers scattered, tension choking the air. But when Adrian entered, the room fell silent. He moved like someone who owned the world every step confident, every gesture controlled. Maya stood beside him, holding the files, trying not to shrink under the weight of the stares. Adrian spoke with icy precision, dissecting the problem, questioning strategies, issuing commands. His voice never wavered. And every now and then, he glanced at Maya as if making sure she was okay. At one point, while she handed him a report, he leaned close and whispered: Don’t let them intimidate you. Look at me if you get nervous. Her chest tightened. She nodded, and for the rest of the meeting, whenever she felt overwhelmed, she did exactly that. Looked at him. And somehow, the chaos didn’t feel so scary.
