CHAPTER ONE — THE INTERVIEW

1250 Words
The glass tower of Cole Enterprises shimmered against the morning sun like a warning. Or a promise. Maya Thompson couldn’t tell which. She stood at the base of the skyscraper, clutching her folder to her chest, trying to ignore the fluttering in her stomach. The building was colossal, intimidating, and far too elegant for someone who had spent the last two months sending out desperate job applications. Her reflection stared back at her from the glass doors—neat bun, simple blouse, trembling fingers. “Get it together, Maya,” she whispered to herself. “It’s just an interview.” But it wasn’t just an interview. Not when the boss was Adrian Cole—the billionaire CEO whispered about in every magazine and business forum. A man rumored to be brilliant, cold, and dangerously impossible to please. People said he fired employees for breathing too loudly. Others claimed he never looked at anyone twice. Yet somehow, the world couldn’t look away from him. Maya inhaled, pushed through the doors, and joined the river of sharply dressed employees moving with military precision. The marble floors gleamed. The air smelled faintly of expensive cologne and ambition. She could practically feel the money in the walls. “Name?” the receptionist asked without glancing up. “Maya Thompson. I—I’m here for the executive assistant interview.” The receptionist finally met her eyes, scanning her from head to toe—not unkindly, but with the sort of look that silently said You don’t look like you belong here. Still, she clicked her headset and spoke softly. “Ms. Thompson for the CEO. Yes… yes, I’ll send her up.” CEO. Her throat tightened at the reminder. This wasn’t some department manager or HR officer. Adrian Cole personally handled the interviews for this position. Which meant she would be in the same room as him. “Elevator 3,” the receptionist said. “Penthouse floor.” Penthouse. Of course. Where else would a man like him keep his lair? The elevator ride felt ridiculously slow. Each floor dinged like it was measuring her heartbeat. She clutched the folder tighter, willing herself to breathe. She needed this job. Rent was late. Bills were climbing. Life wasn’t giving her many options anymore. When the doors finally opened, she stepped into a silent corridor lined with dark wood and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. It was beautiful. And eerily empty. A woman in a fitted navy suit approached her with a clipboard. “You’re early,” the woman said, raising an eyebrow as if this was somehow offensive. “Sorry—I can wait if—” “No. The CEO prefers punctual people. Follow me.” Maya swallowed and followed her through the wide hallway. They stopped at a pair of tall black doors, sleek and intimidating. “He’s inside,” the woman said. “And one more thing—” Maya stiffened. “Don’t let him intimidate you. He respects confidence.” Confidence. Right. She had left that at home. The woman knocked twice, opened the door, and gestured for Maya to enter. The office was enormous—almost like a private suite. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathed the room in sunlight. A massive desk sat at the far end, sleek and black, facing the breathtaking skyline. And behind that desk stood the man everyone whispered about. Adrian Cole. He was taller than she expected. Broad-shouldered. Sharp-featured. His black shirt fit him like it was tailored to his existence alone. His sleeves were rolled to expose strong forearms, veins visible, watch glinting. His hair was dark, slightly tousled, as if he had run a frustrated hand through it just moments ago. But it was his eyes that froze her—cold, gray, and piercing. The kind that saw everything and revealed nothing. He didn’t smile. He didn’t extend his hand. He just looked at her, quietly, powerfully, as though assessing her entire life in one sweep. “You’re Maya Thompson,” he said. His voice was deep, smooth, and unsettlingly controlled. “Yes,” she managed, hoping her voice didn’t tremble. “Sit.” She obeyed immediately, cheeks warming at how quickly she complied. His presence pressed against her like an invisible force. Adrian sat across from her and opened her résumé. The silence stretched, thick and nerve-racking. Finally, he spoke. “You’ve worked… three jobs in the last two years.” “I—yes. Circumstances kept changing.” He hummed thoughtfully. Not judgmental, but analytical. “You have no experience as an executive assistant.” “Yes, but I learn fast. And I’m very disciplined, hardworking, and—” “Why did you apply?” The question cut through her prepared explanations. She blinked. “I… need the job.” He raised an eyebrow. “That’s honest.” “I just thought—” She hesitated. “I thought maybe I could grow here.” A brief, unreadable expression flickered across his face. “You’re nervous.” It wasn’t a question, but she still flushed. “A little.” “Why?” “You’re… you.” The corner of his mouth twitched. Not quite a smile, but something dangerously close. Adrian closed her résumé and leaned back, studying her openly. The scrutiny was intense, but there was something else in his gaze—something warm beneath the ice, like curiosity. “You’re different from the others,” he said. She blinked. “Different how?” “They come in rehearsed. Polished. Terrified of disappointing me.” His eyes didn’t leave hers. “You’re afraid, but you’re still honest.” Maya swallowed. It felt like he could see straight through her. “I value honesty,” he continued. “Especially in a position that requires trust.” Her heartbeat quickened. Was that… good? He stood, walking to the window. Hands in pockets. Back straight. Dominant, confident, unbothered. His silhouette was a streak of power against the bright skyline. Then he turned. Slowly. Deliberately. “You’ll start Monday.” Her mouth fell open. “Wait—I’m hired?” He nodded once. “If you want the job.” “Yes! I—yes, of course!” But as relief washed over her, his expression hardened subtly. “There are rules, Ms. Thompson.” His voice dipped lower. “Strict boundaries. You’ll work closely with me. Travel with me. Manage my schedule, my calls, my meetings. Which means your life will not entirely be your own.” “I understand.” “Do you?” His gaze locked on hers. “Because I demand precision. Commitment. Loyalty. I don’t tolerate mistakes.” She straightened. “I won’t disappoint you.” A long moment passed. Then he said something she didn’t expect: “Good. Because I don’t hire people often. And I don’t change my mind once I’ve chosen someone.” He stepped closer—close enough that she felt his presence like heat, like gravity. “Welcome to Cole Enterprises, Maya.” Her breath caught. For the first time, Adrian smiled. Slightly. Wickedly. As if he already knew a secret she hadn’t discovered yet. A shiver ran down her spine. She had no idea that accepting this job was the first step into a world of desire, danger, and a love that could ruin them both. But as she left his office, heart racing, one thought echoed in her mind: Something about Adrian Cole was irresistible. And terrifying. And she was already in far too deep.
