Dante Moretti walked toward me with the confidence of a man who had never been told no in his life. He held out the roses, his smile wide and charming. Everything about him seemed warm and friendly, but I could feel Lucien tense beside me. That was enough to tell me this man was dangerous. "These are for you," Dante said, offering the flowers. "A small gift to welcome you home." I did not take them. "This is not my home." His smile did not fade. "Not yet, perhaps. But it will be. You belong with your family, with your people. Not locked away in Valeo's fortress." "She is here by choice," Lucien said coldly. Dante finally looked at Lucien, and the warmth in his eyes disappeared. "Is she? Because from what I hear, she only arrived last night after you killed three of the Volkov men. That sounds less like a choice and more like a kidnapping." "Those men were trying to kidnap her," I said, finding my voice. "Lucien saved my life." Dante turned his attention back to me, and his smile returned. "Of course he did. Lucien is very good at making himself seem like a hero. But let me ask you something, Aveline. Did he tell you why he really wants to protect you? Did he tell you what he gets out of this arrangement?" I glanced at Lucien. His face was expressionless, but I could see the tension in his shoulders. "He said he made a promise to my father." Dante laughed. "A promise. How noble. Tell me, Valeo, are you going to tell her the truth, or should I?" "There is nothing to tell," Lucien said, his voice like ice. "You need to leave, Moretti. Now." "Not until I have said what I came to say," Dante replied. He looked at me again, and his expression became serious. "Aveline, I know this world is new to you. I know you are scared and confused. But you need to understand something. Every man in this city wants something from you. Lucien wants control of your father's empire. The Volkovs want you dead. The Stones want to use you. But I am offering you something different. I am offering you partnership, protection, and a future where you do not have to be afraid." "Partnership," I repeated. "You mean marriage." "Yes," he said simply. "Marry me, and our families will unite. No one will dare touch you. You will have power, respect, and freedom. You can live however you want, do whatever you want. All I ask is that you stand beside me." I almost laughed. "You do not even know me. Why would you want to marry me?" "Because you are Vincent Blackthorn's daughter," he said. "Because you have his blood, his legacy, his power. And because together, we could rule this entire city." There it was. The truth. He did not care about me. He cared about what I represented. Just like everyone else. "I am not interested," I said firmly. Dante's smile faded slightly. "You should think carefully before you refuse me, Aveline. Lucien cannot protect you forever. He has enemies too, more than you know. If you stay with him, you will be caught in the middle of a war." "And if I go with you, I will be caught in a different war," I said. "Either way, I am just a piece on someone's chessboard." He studied me for a moment, then nodded slowly. "You are smarter than I expected. Good. That will serve you well. But my offer stands. When you realize that Lucien is using you, when you see his true intentions, come find me. I will still be waiting." He set the roses down on a nearby table and walked toward the door. Before he left, he turned back one more time. "Oh, and Aveline, be careful. Lucien Valeo is the most dangerous man in this city. Not because of what he does, but because of what he is willing to sacrifice to get what he wants. Do not let yourself become his next sacrifice." He left, and the room fell silent. I looked at Lucien, searching his face for some reaction, but he gave me nothing. "Is it true?" I asked quietly. "Are you using me?" "Everyone is using you," he said bluntly. "The question is, who will keep you alive while doing it?" "That is not an answer." He walked closer to me, and I fought the urge to step back. "I told you I would keep you safe, and I will. But I will not lie to you and pretend this is all selfless. Your father's empire is fractured, and I want to restore it. With you as the heir, that becomes possible. So yes, I am using you. But I am also the only one who will tell you the truth." I did not know whether to be angry or relieved. At least he was honest. "And what do you expect me to do? Just hand everything over to you?" "No," he said. "I expect you to learn, to grow stronger, and to decide for yourself what you want. But until then, you stay here, you listen to me, and you trust that I know how to keep you breathing." I wanted to argue, but I was too tired. Too overwhelmed. Everything was happening too fast, and I did not know who to trust. Maybe I could not trust anyone. "Fine," I said. "But I want the door to my room unlocked. If I am going to stay here, I will not be treated like a prisoner." Lucien considered this, then nodded. "Agreed. But if you try to leave the grounds without permission, I will lock you in that room and throw away the key. Understood?" "Understood." He walked past me toward the door, then paused. "And Aveline, stay away from Dante Moretti. He may seem charming, but he is more dangerous than you realize. Men like him do not offer partnership. They offer ownership." "And what do you offer?" I challenged myself. He looked back at me, and for the first time, I saw something other than coldness in his eyes. Something darker. Something that made my pulse quicken. "Survival," he said. "Everything else, you will have to fight for." Then he was gone, leaving me alone with my thoughts, a bouquet of roses I did not want, and the sinking feeling that I had just walked into a trap I could not escape. I picked up the roses and threw them in the trash. I did not need Dante Moretti's gifts. I did not need his promises. I did not need any of them. But as I stood there in that grand entrance hall, surrounded by luxury and danger, I realized something terrifying. I had no idea how to survive in this world. I had no idea who I could trust. And worst of all, I had no idea who I was anymore. I was Aveline Blackthorn, heir to a criminal empire. And I had no idea what that meant.
