17 AT LAST “I’ve lost my will to live,” Grandma said. “What?” Mom reacted, shocked. “When?” “Yesterday. I was reading it, and now I can’t find the damn thing.” One blank look later— “You mean your ‘living will’?” Mom surmised. An even longer blank look— “I’m living where??” Grandma asked, puzzled. Toward the end, conversations like that became the norm … which is a little weird, considering that “weird” became the “norm.” But it did. I gotta admit, that one was especially entertaining, mostly because of what followed: when Mom started laughing and put her arms around Grandma. “I love you, Mama,” she said.
