Looking out the window of her pastel colored bedroom, a petite young woman brushed her long raven hair that cascaded down her back to her hips. A knock on the door took her attention away from the garden outside her window, where she longed to spend her day reading books filled with adventure and knowledge.
"You may come in, Father" Her soft sweet voice called to the man at the door almost like a melody. He opened the door, but remained at the door frame.
"My daughter, I wish to remain alone today. Please do not disturb me. I will be in the study." The man said with sad eyes and voice filled with dread.
Seeing her father appear depressed, she wanted to offer him a gesture of comfort. Setting her blue brush down on the night stand, she walked towards him, and reached for his large hand taking it into her own. The moment she did, she felt a swarm of emotions and memories flood into her. A horrified gasp left her pink lips, as her eyes welled up with tears. Confused by her actions, he went to reach out to her hand that she had withdrew, to see if she was hurt. This action caused her to flinch, and she then held her hand up to her chest.
"I'm so sorry, Father. I always knew this day each year caused you suffering, but now I know why. I am so sorry you lost her." She sobbed with empathy clinging on each word.
Startled by her words, he took a step back, then realisation formed on his face.
"Today you have received your gift, which means today is your 18th birthday. So tell me, what happened when you touched my hand, Daughter?"
"I saw your past memories, I felt as if I have lived them. Every fleeting emotion and every single detail I saw with such clarity." She stuttered as she dried her green eyes with her sleeves.
"The gift of reminisce... You have the ability to access memories. It seems that I have finally found a name that suits you, my daughter. You will be named Remi."
"I have a name now, Father?" Remi exclaimed with eagerness. "This is the best gift I have ever received! My ability comes second to having a name." Her father's small smile widened at Remi's honesty and humble joy.
"We should celebrate. Today is your birthday after all." He spoke softly to Remi.
"We can celebrate my birthday at another time. It wouldn't be appropriate to celebrate anything on this day based on what it signifies to you. I insist that you go and have your solitude. I know what it means to you."
With a nod her father was about to take his leave, but Remi called out to him, "Father, I love you. Thank you for such a beautiful gift." Adoration swelled his aching heart, because this was the first time she had ever said those words to him.
For the past 8 years, Remi has slowly given him the will to live. He never thought that his cold heart could feel warmth until he found the small child on the side of the road eating out of a trash bag. She was so frail back then with eyes that were dull and sunken. Remembering how she had no education, was mute, lived among humans, and scavenged to survive, he was impressed with her growth over the years.
"My daughter has grown into an intelligent beautiful young woman," he thought to himself with a smile. He finally reached his study room, which was connected to his office. In his study he had a collection of books of various origins, but all about dark witches. He was determined to bring down the dark witch coven, and doing so he knew he had to write a letter of alliance. Before he would do that, he wanted to pay some respects. He passed by the peacock green couch in the study, and went to the wooden bookshelf. He grasped the red book with gold lettering, and pulled it downward. The wooden bookshelf seperated revealing a secret entrance, to which he went inside. The room was small, and a single item was on a podium in the middle of the room. The extravagant marbled vase sat upon the podium, and the skylight shown down onto it giving it an unworldy appearance. Behind the podium, there was a picture on the wall of a woman with almond shaped brown eyes, long brown hair, small red lips, and sharp features. She wasn't traditionally attractive, but in his eyes she was the most gorgeous creature to walk the planet.
"Remi reminds me of you everyday with her sweet demeanor. I miss you my beloved, everyday without you gets harder and harder. I will never forget you, and I will get revenge for us. I love you. " He spoke as he caressed the marble vase gently as tears threatened his eyes.
