“Get me out of here, please get me out!”
The human female pound her bloodied knuckles against the steel door. Every strike of her palms against the metal grated on my nerves. I hated humans. Their scent, their frailty, their pathetic weakness—it all sickened me. Right now, stripped of my freedom and bound like a wild beast, nothing would give me greater pleasure than to leap forward and rip this screaming creature to shreds. My claws twitched, the instinct to hunt and destroy burning hot in my chest.
As if sensing my gaze, she abruptly stopped her useless assault on the exit. She spun around to face me, her chest heaving as she sucked in ragged breaths.
Good, she should be scared. She needed to understand exactly what kind of predator she was trapped with.
“Don’t hurt me,” she muttered, her voice barely heard over the sound of breathing. “Please… don’t hurt me.”
She was terrified out of her wits. When I didn't move again, her knees seemed to give out entirely. She slid down the surface of the door until her tiny frame hit the floor, pressing her back firmly against the wall.
It was almost amusing. This same female had been running her mouth just minutes ago in the corridor, shouting profanities and throwing insults at her captors.
Now, she was reduced to a shaking heap on the concrete.
Disgusted by her vulnerability, I dragged my gaze away from her and looked toward the upper corner of the enclosure. The red recording light of the security camera blinked back at me, a constant reminder of the eyes watching our every move.
I had to endure this. If my mission here proved successful, if I secured the antidote to save my son, the very first thing I would do was rip the throat out of the human male with the rimmed glasses. He was the one who had spent hours torturing me, sending thousands of volts of electricity through my body just to see how much an Alpha could take before he broke. I hadn't broken.
And once I had what I came for, I would tear this entire facility apart brick by brick, painting these sterile white walls with their blood.
My eyes drifted back down to the shivering girl on the floor. Perhaps I would rip her apart too. Then again, if she behaved herself and stayed out of my way while I executed my plan, I might just let her live when I leveled this place. Her survival depended entirely on her silence.
Suddenly, the female started singing. Something humans always seemed to do when their minds couldn't handle much terror.
“A joy, a depression, a meanness,” she murmured, her gaze fixed on the empty floor between us. “Some momentary awareness comes… as an unexpected visitor…”
I adjusted my vision, focusing my sight to take a closer look at her. She was incredibly small. Compared to the strong formidable women of my pack, she looked like a delicate doll that would snap under the slightest pressure. Yet her features were strikingly beautiful.
But she was weak. Crucially, fatally weak.
I hissed at the traitorous direction of my thoughts as I tore my eyes away from her. I forced my focus back onto the blinking lens of the security camera, refusing to let a human distraction derail my focus.
A pop cut through the air, followed by the cold drone of the intercom system.
“I can see you’re getting comfortable with the human,” the voice broadcasted into the room.
I didn't need to guess who it was. I knew exactly who sat behind that glass pane in the observation room. Evans or so they called him.
The intercom crackled again as he continued, his tone dripping with arrogance that made my fangs ache to tear into his flesh. “Master the female’s features gently, Alpha. We want you to get thoroughly used to her scent and her appearance before we strip her completely bare to your eyes.” The man paused, a brief rustle of papers filtering through the microphone before he spoke again. “And then you will sle—wait, is it mate? Patrick, is it called mate? Yeah, right, mate. You’ll mate with her. Willingly or unwillingly.”
A vicious sneer twisted my features. My upper lip curled back as my fangs pushed past my gums, gleaming in the dim light. I bared my teeth directly at the lens, a silent promise of the agonizing death awaiting him the moment these chains came loose.
From the speaker, a low amused chuckle echoed through the enclosure, entirely unfazed by my silent threat.
On the floor, the soft singing had abruptly stopped.
I glanced sideways and saw that the human female had gone completely rigid. Her eyes were stretched incredibly wide, the remaining color draining from her face. The horror of Evans' words seemed to have paralyzed her.
Seeing her shocked, pale expression almost made me chuckle. She was finally realizing the true depth of the nightmare she had been dragged into.
But my amusement vanished as the girl suddenly bolted upright.
“You animal!” she screamed at the ceiling, her voice vibrating with a raw hatred that surprised me. She lunged a step toward the camera, her hands balled into tight fists. “How dare you! How dare you bring me to this place to mate with a m—”
She abruptly cut herself off.
Her breath hitched as she froze, her gaze snapping directly to mine. For a fraction of a second, our eyes locked in the dimness of the cell. The realization of what she was about to call me hung heavily in the air between us.
Just as quickly, the fire in her expression wavered, and she diverted her gaze toward the floor.
But her fury was much stronger than her dread. She forced her head back up, glaring at the speaker with rage.
“I will report every single one of you the very second I get out of here!” she yelled, her voice echoing fiercely off the steel door. “Do you hear me? I will hunt you down one by one, and I will kill you myself! You have absolutely no right to use me for anything! Demand my release right now! Let me out!”
The speaker crackled to life once more, and Evans let out a loud, mocking laugh that filled the small room, utterly dismissive of her empty threats.
“I suggest you start counting down the hours, my dear,” Evans said, his voice dripping with condescension.
“Because we’re coming back very soon to take you out and prepare you for the mating process. You can't escape this one my dear.” The man paused, a low sigh passing through the static of the intercom before he added his final words. “But if you ever do manage to get out… please make sure you don’t at least break my glasses. My father gave them to me.”
