Seraphina's POV
My heart skipped a beat when I heard the bells of Valerian Palace tolled, announcing the arrival of the Draven royal delegation. My heart raced. He was here. Kaelan Ryker Draven. My betrothed and future husband. I smoothed the silk of my gown with trembling fingers as I hurried down the corridor toward the grand entrance. The polished obsidian tiles reflected my anxious steps, and the faint scent of wild jasmine drifting in from the palace gardens clung to the air. My people lined the hall, waiting to greet the Alpha King of Draven. But to me, this was not a formal reception. This was the moment I had secretly dreamed of since I was a girl. I had turned eighteen only days ago, and ever since, a hope had taken root inside me, fragile, bright, impossible to ignore. If the Moon Goddess was kind, when I saw him again, he would not just be my betrothed. He would be my mate. I pressed my hand against my racing heart and whispered, "This is it."
The heavy doors swung open. Kaelan entered first, tall and commanding, his presence filling the hall like a storm. My breath caught when our eyes met. The bond snapped into place. My wolf stirred, howling with joy. Mate. My vision blurred as emotion surged through me. Fate had granted me everything I had prayed for. He was mine. But then my gaze shifted, and my heart stumbled. There was a girl beside him. Her fingers curled possessively around his arm, her face tilted toward him with a smile that was too familiar, too intimate. She laughed softly at something he said, and the sound grated against my nerves. For a moment, I couldn't breathe. My hands clenched at my sides. Who is she?
I forced my shoulders back and lifted my chin. My steps were steady. It doesn't matter, I told myself. Maybe she's his sister, a cousin, or someone close to him. Nothing more. But deep inside, doubt clawed at me. Kaelan knew I was his mate; he had known for years. And yet here he was, letting another woman cling to him as though she already belonged to him. Each step was deliberate. My heart hammered, but my face stayed calm. I smiled warmly, as I had learned to do. I stopped a few feet from Kaelan and bowed politely.
"Welcome to the Valerian Kingdom," I said softly. "I am Seraphina Elara Valen. It is my honor to receive you all."
In my peripheral vision, I saw Kaelan remove the girl's hand from his arm. Relief washed over me. My lips curved into a real smile. Maybe this wasn't as bad as I thought. Kaelan's bow in return, with a quiet, "Thank you for the warm welcome," made my heart flutter.
"I'm happy to finally see you, Kaelan," I added, my voice sweet and bright, carrying years of longing. But he did not smile. Not even a flicker. His nod was sharp, almost mechanical, as he asked, "Where are your father and mother?"
My smile wavered briefly before I composed myself. "They will be here soon enough," I replied smoothly. Kaelan's gaze swept the hall, distant, detached. He began introducing his companions: first his knights, then his Beta ... and finally the girl at his side. My stomach knotted. He opened his mouth to explain, but she stepped forward before he could.
"I'm Evelyne," she said, her hand extended with delicate precision. "I am Kaelan's childhood friend."
I forced my body to stay upright. My heart ached at the reminder that she had known him long before I did. That she had laughed with him, spoken with him, touched him freely in all the years I had only dreamed of his presence. Still, I smiled wide, tilting my head as I clasped her hand. "I'm happy to see you here, supporting Kaelan," I said softly. Her smile was sweet, too sweet, but her eyes gleamed with something else. Familiar. That subtle amusement that often hid mockery. My stomach twisted, but I held firm. I would not give her the satisfaction. Just then, my parents arrived. My father's firm nod told me to step back. "Seraphina, return to your room and prepare for tonight's event. We will attend His Majesty and the visitors."
I inclined my head gracefully. "Of course, Father." Before turning away, I stole one last glance at Kaelan. He was watching me. Cold. Unreadable. But beneath that stare, a shadow of something-something like hesitation or regret-flickered for just a heartbeat. A reminder of the bond that connected us, one he refused to acknowledge. My throat tightened. Then Evelyne tugged at his hand, and he turned instantly to her, a soft laugh escaping his lips. Brief. Shallow. Yet it stung all the same. He couldn't even smile at me. His mate. The fiancée who had waited for him for years. I drew a steady breath, forcing my expression to remain composed, even as my chest ached. Mira was waiting for me as I walked back through the hall. She fell into step beside me without a word, her quiet presence a small comfort as we made our way to my chambers. Inside, she moved with practice ease, setting out gowns and jewelry, while I sank onto the edge of the bed. The silence felt heavy, broken only by the soft swish of fabric as she worked. I tried to keep still, but Kaelan's cold gaze lingered in my mind ... and the soft laugh he had given Evelyne replayed mercilessly. Each time it struck sharper than before. Mira glanced at me once, her eyes full of questions she didn't dare ask. I forced a faint smile and let her continue preparing me. I drew in a deep breath, steadying myself. Tonight, I had to be composed. Tonight, I had to smile, no matter how much it hurt. Time slipped by in quiet stillness. A gentle knock on the door made us jump slightly. Mira stood and quickly opened it, revealing my parents smiling warmly. My mother rushed forward and hugged me tightly. "I can't believe this moment is finally here! My only child ... my Seraphina ... will be the Alpha King's Fiancé and Future Luna."
I smiled widely, trying to keep my composure. "Mom, you should stop talking about that. You're making me cry. And besides ... it's just an engagement. I'm not marrying him tonight."
She pulled back slightly, eyes shining. "Not yet, but it's the same. A week from now, you'll leave and go with him."
My smile faltered, and a quiet sadness settled in my chest. I had always known this day would come. But I didn't expect it to feel this hard. I hugged her tightly again. "I'll be fine there, Mom."
My father stepped in, hand resting gently on my shoulder. "As much as I want to stay longer, we can't. Everyone is waiting for you."
My mother and I laughed softly at his impatience, and together, the three of us left my room, heading toward the venue. The grand hall for the engagement was decorated with unusual elegance. Crystalline sconces reflected dancing candlelight across deep mahogany walls, and velvet tapestries embroidered with celestial motifs hung along the corridors. Guests, dressed in their finest, were already beginning to take their seats. But something made my chest tighten. Kaelan still hadn't arrived. My father leaned down and whispered gently, "He'll be here soon, Seraphina. Don't worry."
I nodded, though unease swept over me. I found my chair and sat, keeping my posture perfect. My hands rested neatly in my lap, though my heart raced. As I waited, my eyes wandered across the crowd. Most visitors were from Valerian's noble families; a few were unfamiliar, perhaps from Kaelan's kingdom or other foreign lands. Minutes passed, and Kaelan still had not appeared. Panic crept into every thought. What if he changed his mind? What if he doesn't want to be engaged to me at all?
My chest tightened, my stomach twisted, and a shiver ran down my spine. I bit my lip, trying to calm my racing heart. Told myself to stay optimistic, to wait patiently. Just as panic began to overwhelm me, the hall fell silent. The announcer stepped forward, his voice booming across the room.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please rise and welcome ... the Alpha King, Kaelan Ryker Draven!"
My heart stopped. All eyes turned toward the entrance. I straightened in my chair, palms slightly clammy, breath catching. The doors opened, and a hush spread through the room. There he was. Kaelan. Gray eyes scanned the crowd, expression cold and commanding. Every movement is precise, every step purposeful. His presence filled the space, like he owned every inch of the hall. And yet ... he looked directly at me. Time seemed to freeze. My heart pounded, and the world around me blurred. This was it. Kaelan had arrived. The engagement was about to become official. But hope is a fragile thing. Just when I thought everything would be alright, something unexpected happened. My heart lifted as I stood, excited to finally see him. But I froze. Evelyne had suddenly appeared and wrapped her hand around his arm. Her wide, triumphant smile made my chest tighten. Whispers filled the hall. My parents stood beside me, demanding, "Kaelan, what is going on?"
Hope began to crumble. Warmth faded, replaced by confusion and bitter ache. Kaelan's voice cut through the whispers, cold and sharp. "I will not marry Seraphina. I don't want a foreign princess too fragile and useless to stand as my queen. I am the Alpha King. I chose my bride."
Then he pulled Evelyne closer. "Evelyne will be my bride ... the future Queen Luna of Draven Kingdom." His words pierced me like ice. I felt the ground slip beneath me. Everything I had imagined, everything I had hoped for, shattered.
"And I, Kaelan Ryker Draven, reject you, Seraphina Elara Valen, as my mate, my bride, and the future Queen Luna."
Pain ripped through me. My wolf howled in fury, screaming to fight, to refuse, to tear the world apart for daring to reject me.
