Chapter 9 Elara's POV The chirping sound of birds by the window side woke me up. A yawn slipped out of my lips as I rubbed my eyes with the back of my palm. I stretched, the tension vanished off my shoulder. I sat up on the bed, my leg flung to the side of the bed. I glanced at the clock hanging above my door 7:23 Am Shit! I rose to my feet, scrambling for my slippers. How come I had slept off without realizing how much time had gone. Classes started by 8:30 and here I was still about to take a shower, dress up and eat. I quickly took off my clothes and without wasting time, I rushed into the bathroom. I got under the shower, letting my hair fall while the cold water hit my skin. As it dropped, it made me shiver, but I didn’t care. I had no time to waste. Besides, having your bath with cold water leaves a feeling of coldness in your heart and I needed just that to begin the day after successfully ruining the Maddox party last night. I washed up as fast as I could. I grabbed my towel, wiped myself dry and hurried back into my room. I rushed out of the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror and in less than ten minutes, I was fully dressed in a simple white top and jeans. I pushed out the drawer and pulled out my comb. I brushed my hair quickly, packed it to a slick pony tail and grabbed my bag…..all set. I rushed downstairs, my heart beating fast. I clutched my bed firmly, sprinting down the stairs, panting. What if Draven had already left for school? Does that mean that I would have to go to school alone and face Maddox? I rubbed my nose He hated waiting, and I didn’t want to annoy him again. I braced myself for the worst but as soon as I reached the dining room, I froze. Draven hadn't gone . He was still there, seated at the table with his face as calm as ever. He had his phone in his right hand while he held onto his coffee with the other. He seemed to just be scrolling through his phone like he had all the time in the world. He looked so composed, sipping his coffee slowly. I let out a small breath of relief, my lips curving into a nervous smile. I walked over and sat down. Breakfast had already been served. My stomach rumbled. I rubbed my hands together, eager to dig in. “Good morning, Draven.” I greeted, my lips curling to a smile. “What's so good about this morning, Elara? You kept me waiting. Is that how you will treat a business appointment? Check your time, Elara and tell me what it says?”. His tone wasn't harsh but it was enough to get me wondering if he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed. “I’m sorry,” I said quickly, my voice low as I looked down at my hands. I didn't know what kind of person Draven was. I was still observing him. Apology seems like the best way to begin my response. “I overslept, Draven and didn’t realize how late it was. I would never keep you waiting intentionally. It won’t happen again.” Draven looked up at me and he set his phone down. He leaned back slightly into his chair, his calm but firm eyes fixed on his face, his gaze unwavering. “I’m not angry at you, Elara." he said, his tone softer now. “But what you did today was terrible. Keeping to time is part of who I am. It's something I'd appreciate. I don’t like waiting, especially for someone important to me. You should have noticed it by now. I’m only saying this because I care. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to scold you.” he assured. His words caught me off guard because I wasn't expecting him to say such compassionate words to me. I felt my cheeks warm immediately. I forced a stiff smile unsure of how to feel. I nodded slowly. “I understand and be rest assured that it won’t happen again.” He gave a small nod of approval and motioned toward the food. He picked up his cup of coffee and took a sip. I smiled shyly and picked up my cutlery. I began to eat the pancakes and scrambled eggs on my plate. It was tasty, just what I needed to keep me happy this morning. The buttery taste of the pancake melting in my mouth was just the best feeling I could experience. It was an assurance that despite what I may face, I would have a good day. After breakfast, Draven grabbed his car keys and we walked out to the garage where his Electric-blue SUV was parked amongst other luxurious cars. I got into the passenger seat beside Draven. He ignited the engine, reversed before revving into the highway. Luckily we arrived at school just a few minutes before the bell. My heart began to race. I had just arrived and I knew my day was going to be awful. Draven parked neatly in his usual spot and stepped out of the car first. I was about to open my door but then he walked around to my side, yanked the door open and offered his hand with a wink. I hesitated for a moment because some students were hanging around, trying to know what would happen next. Fuck it! If I wanted respect, I had to earn it. I flashed the sweetest smile at Draven then took his hand. As soon as I stood, his fingers slid between mine, locking firmly. My heart skipped a beat. We walked side by side into the school compound, heading to our school block. Draven’s grip is steady and sure. Students gathered in cliques, gossiping. There was no way they would see me with Draven Kilaed and kept shut.
