SIENNA
Most people would think being in a career line like mine meant I despised office jobs. It didn’t matter to me.
My penthouse office was nice enough. Plus, it had a pretty sick view of the skyline. And yet even as I worked, there was a certain tension to the air. One that wasn’t there before.
A knock on the door broke my focus. “Come in.”
The door creaked open and my assistant walked in. “It’s Alpha Quinn, ma’am.”
“What is it?” I set my tablet down.
“He’s been…unusually persistent.” She continued. “He wants another meeting with you. Personal, this time.”
I stared in amusement, clicking my tongue. He still had a lot of confidence even after all these years. I’d hand it to him.
Wordlessly, I waved her off then turned back to my tablet. He could chase ghosts if he wanted. That was all I ever was to him anyway.
Even with all the nonchalance I’d tried to put on, my mind still wandered back to our previous meeting every now and then.
The confusion in his eyes, the way something dangerous close to recognition had flickered behind them.
“He’s been digging.”
I looked up to see Carden enter the room. His voice was tight with concern as he spoke. “He’s already gotten his men tracing your files and database.”
Outside I was composed, but deep down, I’d tensed up a little. “They won’t find anything before S. Croix was born. Let him snoop all he wants.”
“You have to be careful still, Sienna,” He added after a bit of hesitation. “The last thing you want to do is move like you’re untouchable.”
“But I am,” I retorted smoothly, eyes never leaving his. “I have you after all.”
I hadn’t missed the way he called me Sienna, instead of Selene. I don’t bother telling him to correct himself. Right now, a part of me still felt like her.
Even though I’d waved off my assistant without when she tried to bring up Damon and what he wanted, it didn’t mean I’d stopped my digging.
From the info I’d dug up, Marco had managed to intercept a hacker trail that led…nowhere. Selene Croix had no past. No school, no legal birth record, nothing to trace her beyond three years ago.
Just the way I wanted.
In the meantime, I’d managed to intercept a phone call between some of his pack members.
“He’s downright pissed, I tell ya.”
“You think he’ll be able to find them out?” One asked.
“With how hard he’s moving, I’ll be damned if he doesn’t fish her out.”
I clicked my tongue, before ending the interception. Carden had been beside me all through it, listening in as well.
“He’s tearing through every digital wall you’ve tried to build.” Carden warned.
My lips curved faintly. “I’d like to see him try.”
Behind my calm façade, my pulse betrayed me. I doubt Carden noticed. And even if he did, he said nothing about it.
If Damon knew, if he knew the truth about who I was, would he beg? Or would he break?
“A possible liquidation could be your only way out.” I reasoned with the representatives of OCTA group.
They seemed to be seriously ruminating over what I’d said. I held most of the cards and even their ambassador who’d been sending me sleazy looks knew I was spot on.
My assistant leaned closer to my ear. “Damon’s in the building.”
I gritted my teeth. “How did he manage to find here?”
“I—”
“Never mind that,” I cut in again, turning back to the representatives.
As soon as the meeting was done, the first place I made my way to was my office. I’d deal with Damon as soon as I’d sorted somethings out.
I was just about to call for my assistant when the door creaked open. Instantly, I raised my head to meet her.
“It’s good you’re here. If you could—”
The words died in my throat as I stared back at a young boy. Soft blue eyes stared back at me curiously. Eyes I never thought I’d get to see again.
Akira.
He was taller now, skin brighter than before and one of his front teeth missing. Goodness, how long had it been since I last saw my baby?
Tears pricked at my eyes as if on command, despite all attempts at holding my composure. He looked down shyly.
“I—I’m sorry. I’m looking for my daddy. Can you help me find him?”
My heart broke with each word that left his lips. I wanted nothing more than to pull him into my arms and give him the longest hug ever.
But I couldn’t. Not now, not ever again. I cleared my throat. “Where was your daddy last?”
He finally raised his head, tears already welling up in his eyes. “We were in a r—room, and then I saw a really cool computer thingy. When I looked back, he was gone already.”
I hummed out, forcing a kind smile on. “Alright, dear. We’ll find your dad in no time, okay?”
“Okay,” He quickly wiped away his tears.
His eyes lingered on mine for a while, wide with something along the line of confusion and…remembrance?
Did he remember me? Could it be possible? It’d been three long years. And if even Damon couldn’t recognize me so easily, then the chances he would were very slim.
I smiled again. “Now, let’s—
“Where is my son?!”
There was a bit of commotion outside the door. Akira’s eyes instantly turned to the door, a small whine leaving his lips.
I could make out a bit more struggle before the door slammed open. Damon eyes were wide with anger. When they locked on to Akira, they calmed down a little.
Alpha Carden walked in right after, a feral growl leaving his lips. “You’ll leave this office instantly.”
Different men lined up behind him and they looked just about ready to throw Damon out. I held out a hand, the chaos immediately coming to a still.
“Everyone other than Carden, out.” I ordered calmly.
In a matter of seconds, the room cleared. Which left me, Damon and Carden. Damon turned back to me, his voice low and trembling underneath.
“Who are you?”
I arched a brow. “You’ve asked that question twice now, Alpha Quinn. I thought you’d easily recognize power when you saw it.”
“Enough with the games!” He slammed his hand against the wall. “You have no past, no record whatsoever. Just three years that affirm your existence. Just what are you hiding?”
Carden tried to move when he inched closer but I simply held out a hand. Slowly, I got out of my seat, heels echoing against the floor.
“Hiding?” I chuckled. “That’s rich coming from someone who buried the truth with his own hands.”
Damon stepped closer, eyes burning with confusion and agitation. “Why—Why do you smell like her?”
For a second, my heart skipped. “Like who?”
“Sienna.”
The name felt like a blow. When I tried to back away, he grabbed my wrist.
“Just tell me who you are.”
I wrenched my wrist instantly, the carefully constructed mask I’d worn for so long slowly starting to crack.
“You don’t even recognize your own Luna, do you?”
