The Pack Turns on Me

1505 Words
Lyran stands frozen in the doorway, eyes wide, chest heaving as the bond-glow lights the entire chamber in a sickening silver. His voice breaks first. Lyran: “Aria… what are you doing?” His stare flicks from her trembling hand—still on Kael’s arm—to Kael chained to the wall, jaws clenched, curse simmering under his skin. The glow thrums like a heartbeat between them. Aria jerks her hand back. “I—I didn’t. I couldn’t stop it.” Kael growls low, the sound vibrating through the chains. “Get out, Lyran.” Lyran: “Not until she explains.” Kael snaps the chain tension, metal screeching. “She doesn’t owe you anything.” Lyran’s voice softens, but it’s coated with hurt. “Aria… just tell me you didn’t accept it. Tell me you didn’t let him” Kael: “She didn’t let anything happen.” His eyes flash molten silver. “This bond forced itself. Like it forced itself on me.” Aria swallows. “Lyran, I swear, I didn’t touch him on purpose. The curse” Lyran: “The curse?” He laughs—sharp, humorless. “That’s what you’re calling this? A curse?” Kael’s voice drops, lethal. “Lyran. Leave.” Lyran steps inside instead, gaze pinned to the fading light on Aria’s skin. “That glow… that wasn’t just bond residue. That was connection.” Aria whispers, “I know.” His expression shatters. The door slams open. Warriors flood in. Two grip Aria’s arms before she can breathe. Aria: “Wait—Lyran! Tell them!” Warrior: “The elders demand her immediate presence.” Kael snarls, pulling the chains so hard dust rains from the ceiling. “Touch her again and I’ll break every bone in your” They drag her out anyway. Lyran steps aside. He doesn’t stop them. He doesn’t even look at her. And that silence hurts more than the bruising hold on her arms. The hall is already full—warriors, nobles, curious pack members pressing to see the human disaster dragged before them. Voices rise instantly. “Is that the girl from the ceremony?” “She marked the wrong heir.” “Seduction. Has to be.” “She’s always been too close to them.” Aria’s stomach twists. One elder slams his staff. “Bring her forward.” She’s shoved to her knees. The High Elder eyes her with cold disgust. “Do you deny seducing the Alpha’s cursed heir?” Aria’s head snaps up. “I didn’t seduce anyone!” Murmurs ripple. “Lying.” “Humans always lie.” The elder continues, “We witnessed a bond glow—stronger than a first-touch surge. That level of resonance requires deliberate emotional opening. Confess, child.” Aria’s voice cracks. “I don’t even know what that means! Kael was in pain, I touched him—it just happened!” Another elder scoffs. “How convenient.” Aria looks desperately toward the entrance. No Lyran. No Kael. Just eyes filled with judgment. At last footsteps echo. Lyran strides in, expression neutral—too neutral. The crowd shifts, eager to see the golden heir’s verdict. The High Elder gestures. “Lyran. You witnessed them in physical contact. State what you saw.” Everyone goes silent. Aria whispers, “Please…” Lyran closes his eyes for a moment. When he opens them, something fragile is gone. Lyran: “I saw them connected.” Gasps. Whispers. An entire pack turning like wolves scenting blood. Aria feels her throat tighten. “Lyran, tell them it wasn’t—” Lyran: “The bond reacted to her. That doesn’t happen without consent.” Aria flinches as if slapped. “Consent?” she chokes. “Lyran, it pulled me—” Lyran: “Aria… stop.” His tone is ice. And the humiliation hits like a storm: heat flooding her face, eyes burning, her heartbeat a drum of shame. THE ELDERS’ JUDGMENT The High Elder nods slowly. “Then the charge stands.” Aria’s voice rises in panic. “I didn’t do anything! I didn’t seduce Kael—I didn’t want this!” The second elder sneers. “You wanted Lyran. Everyone saw it. But when the younger brother became more… vulnerable, you switched targets.” Aria feels the floor tilt. “Lyran, say something. Please.” Lyran’s jaw locks. “Holding a cursed heir while he rages—anyone would know the risk. If she touched him, she chose to.” Her breath collapses in her chest. “That’s not fair,” she whispers. But her voice is swallowed by the crowd. A violent gust of wind slams the doors open. Kael storms inside, chains hanging broken from his wrists, eyes burning silver. The room erupts. “He escaped“ “He’s unstable“ “Guards” Kael’s voice booms through the hall, feral and controlled at once: Kael: “Touch her again and I’ll rip the spine out of the next person who calls her a seductress.” Every elder goes silent. Warriors freeze mid-step. Kael stalks forward until he stands between Aria and the world, breathing hard, curse simmering under his skin. High Elder: “Kael, control yourself” Kael: “Control?” He laughs, dangerous. “You think I would be standing here if she hadn’t touched me?” The elders hesitate. Kael spreads his arms, exposing the burn marks on his skin. “She kept me from shifting. She kept me alive.” Gasps ripple. Impossible. Unheard of. Kael growls, “And you dare accuse her?” The High Elder slams his staff. “Your curse distorts the bond. Anything you claim is unreliable.” Kael steps forward. “Say that again.” “Kael—stop,” Aria whispers. He stiffens hearing her voice, the curse flickering like a dying flame. The elder glares. “We stand by our charge. The girl manipulated the bond to ensnare the heir.” More whispers. “Manipulated…” “Calculated…” “Dangerous…” Aria trembles, anger rising through the humiliation. “I didn’t” But the elder cuts her off. “Silence.” Lyran finally speaks again, but his voice is low, uncertain. “If she admits it was a mistake—maybe the punishment can be” Aria’s heart cracks. “You think I did this to you?” Lyran looks away. Voices explode again. “She should be exiled.” “No—watched. Controlled.” “She can’t stay here. She’s a threat.” “A human with that kind of influence? Dangerous.” “She bewitched him.” Aria feels smaller and smaller, drowning under the heat of a hundred hateful eyes. Kael’s growl vibrates through the room. “If any of you speak about her again” The High Elder shouts, “Kael! Stand down!” Kael snarls, “Make me.” The curse flickers again, threatening to burst free. Warriors reach for weapons. Aria grabs Kael’s wrist. “Stop. Please.” The curse dims instantly. Every elder looks stunned. That reaction is too strong. Too real. Too undeniable. The High Elder clears his throat. “Then it is settled. The girl will be detained” Kael lunges. “Over my dead" “KAEL!” Aria’s voice cracks. His head snaps toward her. Her hand is still gripping his wrist, the bond pulsing between them. She whispers, “Don’t. They’ll hurt you.” He breathes hard. The curse warps his eyes. But he stops. The High Elder smirks. “How touching. The seductress tames the cursed wolf.” Kael roars, “Call her that again” Aria steps between them, shaking. “I’m not a seductress. I’m not a manipulator. I’m not” The High Elder raises a hand. “Enough. She will stay with Kael.” The room goes silent. “What?” “She—what?!” “Impossible.” “Unacceptable!” Lyran goes pale. Aria stares. “Stay… with him?” Kael stiffens. The High Elder continues, “If she is tied to his curse, the safest place for her is with him. And the safest place for him—” His eyes narrow. “—is under constant supervision.” Kael opens his mouth to argue, but the elder cuts him off. “This is not optional.” The decision hits like a slap. Aria whispers, “You can’t force that.” The High Elder smirks. “We can. And we will.” Voices explode, But are instantly silenced when Kael steps forward, shoulders squared. He looks straight at the elders. At the pack. At Lyran. Then he speaks, voice cutting through the hall like a blade: Kael: “She stays with me. The curse will kill me if she doesn’t.” Gasps. Shock. Disbelief. Aria’s knees nearly buckle. Lyran’s face collapses. The High Elder freezes. And Kael? Kael looks at Aria with something raw, fierce, and terrifyingly real burning behind his eyes—as the bond ignites between them again.
