Chapter One: Fleeing

454 Words
My mother and I are alone on this stormy night for my father has not come home from work. There was someone knocking at our door, but mother was only paying attention to me to keep her mind off her husband and my father. Our neighbor Edana-Ava came rushing in, soaking wet, and holding something in her hands. Out of breath she said, “Here is your husband’s….invisibility cloak. His cloak… got snagged on something while crossing …the border causing him to expose himself. I managed to get the cloak from him before they came so I can give to you. They have him. You must hurry for they will be here soon.” Tears formed in both of their eyes as Edana-Ava handed over the cloak. “Thank you. I should start packing now.” “I can stay here with Elena-Irene and defend your house, while you go to Elder Eldridge-Alastair to ask him to put a protection spell over your house.” “I do not what you to risk your life then you already are. You can help me pack, though.” "If that is your wish, I will gladly help you pack." Only the husband or in the case that you are single, Elder Eldridge-Alastair can put up a protection spell around your house so that non-magikans can not see strange occurrences in or around your cottage. Although, in our case, since my mother is now a widow, she can ask Elder Eldridge-Alastair to put up a new protection spell, for the protection is gone after the husband dies. The two of them packed in silence, putting belongings in trunks that are not already in trunks and sacks to be placed in an expandable bag. When all but a few books and herbs were left, my mother gave them to Edana-Ava saying, “Take these spell books and herbs. I will not need them where we are going.” “Thanks. Though are you sure you do not want to keep them for Elena-Irene when she gets older?” “Not even then. I what Elena-Irene to have a normal life and that will not happen if I actually change my mind in staying or by bringing along the spell books and herbs. I will miss you.” “I understand. Good luck on your new Iife. I will miss you too.” With that the two friends hugged for the last time and Edana-Ava slipped a book into her bag behind her back. Mother picked me up from my cradle, slung the bag over her shoulder, and draped my father’s cloak around us. Without looking back my mother started to run into the storm, and into the great unknown.
