Chapter Six: Reliving the Past

1756 Words
As we walk, my mind starts to wonder to the night of my birth that changed my life. The aspect of going on this journey makes me ponder what life would have been like at this village. Would I have friends there? Would I have gone to a school with others like me then being home schooled? Lastly, would mother have taught me how to use my abilities, instead of asking Ken-Farris for help? When I found that amulet in addition to the book with the sun and moon engraved on it, it awoke something in me. The only clues to my past are the amulet, the book, and the dream vision. I knew I had a father, but I never knew that I was born somewhere else. Speaking of which, I never knew what happened to my father until my mother told me recently. Since my mother never mentioned him, I could only assume the worst of the worst for a young child. That is being abandoned, but of course that is not true since I had a dream vision of my father on my fifth birthday. I guess anything that is odd to some people, makes them fear you. That is what I got out of my dream vision. I think that is why my mother did not want me to say my given name to anyone. My name and my parents’ names are differently weird. My mind starts to wander to this village I was born at. Will there be someone who will recognize my face since I look like my mother? Would anyone remember what happened to my father and whether or not the cottage still stands? I am sure it is like the one I live in now. Regardless of that, it was the place where I was born, so I would like to if it still stands. If people recognize my face, would they show pity and take me in? More importantly, would people whisper behind my back to talk about what happened with my father, all the while smiling at me? I wish mother told me at least a name that she knew so I can stay with that person. Just in case the book tracks down a not so friendly person. After a while, I looked up at the sky and noticed that it is getting light out. I suggest to Kin-Farris that we should stop to make camp. He told me that we should. We unpacked our furs as well as our blankets and arranged the furs near each other’s. Once we lay down with the blankets covering us, Midnight curled up with me, and we drifted off to sleep. We woke up to the sounds of birds. We brought out berries from our sacks and bread from Ken-Farris’. I gave some of my berries to Midnight to eat. After our merger breakfast, we grabbed our sacks so that we can get dressed in privacy. With clean clothes, I went back to camp. When Ken-Farris came back, he told me that he was going fishing. So I decided to go collect firewood and herbs and Midnight came with me. In the tree line, I found onion grass as well as lemon grass. Since I do not have a basket with me, I used my mind to lift the firewood. By the time I came back to camp, Ken-Farris is descaling a fish he caught. I first let the logs drop and put down the herbs. I rearranged the logs and started the fire. Once the fish had no more scales, I rubbed the herbs I found onto it, and speared it with a stick. Ken-Farris got the rest of the bread from his sack and poured the berries into the jar lid when it was time to get fish away from the fire, he got the plates, cups, and utensil from my sack. I placed the fish on one of the plates and cut it into thirds. I put one of the thirds on the other plate and divided up the berries. Ken-Farris filled the cups with his ability and we began to eat. Midnight came up to me for her share of the fish. Once we were done eating, I decided that I should look for more berries as well as some mushrooms. Ken-Farris chose to stay to watch the camp. I told Midnight to stay to keep Ken-Farris company. She listened to me as I grabbed the jar. I found some berries and put them into jar. After a while, I found some mushrooms and put them into the jar as well. Then, I realized that I do not have anything to give to the person we will be staying with. Thus, I decided to pick some flowers. Being near the river while I am looking, I rinsed the berries plus the mushrooms. I found some pretty flowers and went back to camp. Back at camp Ken-Farris finished descaling the other fish and drying his scaling knife. I gave him the flowers to him so they will not die of thirst and took the fish to prepare dinner. I speared the fish with a different stick, and opened the jar to get to the mushrooms. I also stabbed the mushrooms on either side of the fish, and add new firewood on the remains from lunch time. Once the fire got started, I began to roast the dinner. As I roast the fish and mushrooms, Ken-Farris filled the cups with his ability. He then handed me a plate so that I could put the food on it. I grabbed a fork and knife, pushed the food of the stick, and divided it into three portions. Ken-Farris handed me another plate and put his portion on it. Midnight came to me for her dinner. We passed the jar of berries, but did not eat them all. While we ate, he told me that he brought along a scurrying bowl so that we can see the village before we even got there. I told him that is very clever of him and he just smiled. He got the bowl out of his sack and once it is filled with water, he intoned, “Water pure and light, show me her birth right.” The water glossed over to show a quaint village a little of ways from the river we have been following by star light. I cannot believe we are so close to our destination. Since we still need to pack up, Ken-Farris looked away to break the connection, and dumped the water way. He put it back into his sack, while I am doing the dishes. After a quick night snack of berries, we packed our things, and put the flowers into the jar with water. Then we were on our way again. When we noticed that the stars are getting brighter, we stop so that I could get my book from the bag. I wanted to try the location spell when we got closer to the village therefore we can easily stop at a cottage. Ken-Farris got out the supplies for the location spell. I began to say the words as he rubbed the ingredients onto the book. “Jasmine mint; show me the place that belongs to this fingerprint.” The book gave a faint glow and I am guessing that it worked. We started to walk again. We finally reached the village in the middle of the night. After a couple of minutes, we found the right cottage by using a locator spell on the book with the sun and moon on it since I was not the last person to touch the book. I knocked on the door and there was no answer. Thus I Knocked again, but a little bit louder. A woman about my mother’s age finally answered the door. “Can I help you?” Edana-Ava asked. Then, when she saw my face more clearly, she gasped. “Oh my, you look like your mother. I know your mother and yours young man.” I looked at Ken-Farris and he just shrugged his shoulders. “We need a place to stay for a while”, I replied. “Well, come on in. I will make some tea since you traveled far.” “Thank you.” With that, she moved out of the way for us. The cottage reminds me of the one near the woods. I placed the jar on the table. We then sat down at the kitchen table while Edana-Ava made tea. She told us that her name is Edana-Ava as she took out cups and a bowl For Midnight. Edana-Ava filled the bowl with water and placed it on the ground. Then, the tea was ready. She poured the tea into the cups and gently placed them onto the table. Once she sat down, we said our thanks. It seems like Midnight is thirsty for she is drinking it too fast. After we introduced ourselves, I took a sip of tea, and asked, “If you really know my mother, what happend to my father?” “The night after you were born, I came over to your mother’s. I told her that I found her husband’s cloak at the boundary. That they took him and it was too late. She fled with you, saying that she wanted a different life for you.” “Oh, I see. Who are they? Is my mother’s cottage still standing?” “I am sorry. They as in the non-magikan came and wreaked the place since it was not under your father’s protection spell anymore.” “That is a shame. I would have loved to see it.” “Well that is enough depressing talk for one night. There is a festival in three days from now. I would like it if you two can come. I suggest you finish your tea while I go and get your beds sorted out.” With that, Edana-Ava left the kitchen. When we finished our tea, we placed our cups into the tube below the water pump, and went to the sitting room. Edana-Ava came back and told us our sleeping arrangements. Apparently there is a cot in the corner for Ken-Farris in addition to there is a spare room for me and Midnight. We bid each other good night and got ready for bed. I picked up Midnight and curled up in the bed that was for us.
