Chapter 9 — The Confession
That night, Seraphina couldn't sleep.
She walked downstairs and found Alexander sitting alone in the living room.
“You're awake.”
“So are you.”
She sat across from him.
“I want to ask you something.”
“Ask.”
“Do you hate Damian?”
Alexander looked at the fire.
“Yes.”
“Because of Clara?”
“Yes.”
“Do you hate me because I'm connected to him?”
He immediately looked at her.
“No.”
“Then why did you marry me?”
Alexander was silent.
She waited.
Finally, he said,
“At first, because I needed a wife.”
“And now?”
He looked at her.
“Now I'm not sure.”
Her heart beat faster.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the contract has become complicated.”
Seraphina smiled faintly.
“Because of feelings?”
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
Alexander stood.
“I didn't plan this.”
“Neither did I.”
He walked toward her.
“I told myself I could keep things simple.”
“But?”
“But every day I spend with you makes that harder.”
Seraphina looked up at him.
“Alexander…”
He stopped.
“I won't ask you for anything you don't want to give.”
She smiled.
For the first time, she realized that perhaps her heart was beginning to trust him.
Then a loud sound came from upstairs.
They both turned.
Someone had entered the house.
Alexander immediately moved in front of Seraphina.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Seraphina.”
“I won't hide.”
They walked upstairs.
The hallway was empty.
But the door to Alexander's study was open.
Inside, papers were scattered across the floor.
And on the desk was a single envelope.
Alexander opened it.
His face changed.
“What is it?”
He handed Seraphina the photograph.
It showed Clara.
But this time, there was something written on the back.
She didn't die in an accident.
Seraphina looked at Alexander.
“You knew?”
“No.”
He stared at the photograph.
Someone had written another message underneath.
The person who killed Clara is closer than you think.
Alexander's face became pale.
Then Seraphina noticed something.
A ring on the floor.
She picked it up.
It belonged to Damian.
