Chapter 8 — The Lie
The rumors spread quickly.
People accused Seraphina of cheating.
Others claimed her marriage to Alexander was falling apart.
Her family became worried.
Alexander's company received calls from reporters.
Seraphina expected Alexander to become angry.
Instead, he remained calm.
“We'll find out who did this.”
“You believe me?”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
The simple answer surprised her.
“You don't think I met Damian?”
“I know you didn't.”
“How?”
“Because I know you.”
Seraphina stared at him.
They had only been married for weeks.
Yet somehow, Alexander understood her better than Damian ever had.
“Why do you trust me?”
“Because you haven't given me a reason not to.”
Her eyes softened.
“Alexander…”
Before she could continue, his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What happened?”
He listened.
Then he looked at Seraphina.
“Your father's company has been attacked.”
Seraphina's heart dropped.
“What?”
They rushed there.
Documents were scattered everywhere.
Computers had been damaged.
Her father stood in the middle of the office, looking devastated.
“Someone stole our financial records.”
Alexander immediately began examining the room.
Seraphina looked at her father.
“Dad, who would do this?”
Her father looked frightened.
“I don't know.”
Then a security guard approached.
“Sir, there's something you should see.”
He handed Alexander a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Seraphina looked at it.
It showed her and Alexander entering the building.
On the back was a message:
STOP DIGGING, OR YOU WILL LOSE MORE THAN YOUR COMPANY.
Seraphina felt a chill.
Alexander folded the photograph.
“Go home.”
“No.”
“Seraphina.”
“I want to know what's happening.”
He stared at her.
“This isn't a game.”
“I know.”
“You could get hurt.”
“I don't care.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“I do.”
The words hung between them.
Seraphina looked into his eyes.
Neither moved.
Then Alexander quietly said,
“I can't lose another person I care about.”
Her heart tightened.
“Another person?”
He looked away.
“Clara.”
Seraphina understood.
But before she could respond, her phone rang.
It was Damian.
She answered.
His voice was low.
“You're asking the wrong questions, Seraphina.”
“What do you want?”
“I want to save you.”
“From what?”
“Alexander.”
Th
e call ended.
Seraphina stared at the phone.
She didn't know who to believe anymore.
