Chapter 6 — The Truth About Damian
Seraphina couldn't breathe.
“What did you just say?”
Alexander walked into the room.
“Put the photograph down.”
“No.”
“Seraphina.”
“Tell me what happened.”
Alexander looked away.
“Three years ago, Clara was investigating financial fraud inside my company.”
“And Damian?”
“Damian worked with the people responsible.”
Seraphina shook her head.
“That can't be true.”
“You know him better than I do.”
“I thought I did.”
Alexander looked at her.
“That is exactly the problem.”
He explained that Clara had discovered evidence of a financial scheme involving several businessmen.
Before she could expose them, she disappeared.
Weeks later, she died in an accident.
Alexander had spent years trying to discover who had betrayed her.
“And you believe Damian was involved?”
“I know he was.”
Seraphinas stomach turned.
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because you wouldn't have believed me.”
“You could have tried.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“I didn't want to destroy your family.”
“What does my family have to do with it?”
He paused.
“Everything.”
Seraphina stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
Alexander placed another file on the desk.
Inside were old business records.
Her father's name appeared repeatedly.
Her eyes widened.
“My father?”
“Your father worked with Damian's family years ago.”
“That doesn't mean anything.”
“It does when the money disappears.”
Seraphina shook her head.
“My father would never steal.”
“I didn't say he did.”
She looked at Alexander.
“Then what are you saying?”
“Someone used your father's company to move the money.”
“Who?”
Alexander looked directly into her eyes.
“Damian's father.”
Seraphina felt dizzy.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because the people involved made sure no one knew.”
She closed the file.
“What do you want from me?”
“I want the truth.”
“And you think marrying me will help you find it?”
“Yes.”
Seraphina stared at him.
“So this marriage was never just about appearances.”
“No.”
“Then what am I to you?”
Alexander didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he said,
“Someone who can help me uncover what happened.”
The words hurt more than she expected.
She turned away.
“I thought maybe…”
“Maybe what?”
“Nothing.”
Alexander watched her leave.
For the first time since their marriage began, he looked worried.
Meanwhile, across the city, Damian sat in a dark office.
Vivienne entered.
“She knows about Clara.”
Damian looked up.
“How much?”
“Enough to become dangerous.”
He stood.
“Then we need to stop her.”
Vivienne smiled.
“And Alexander?”
Damian's expression hardened.
“Alexander will lose everything before this is over.”
