Chapter 2 — Alexander Kingsley The next morning, Seraphina woke up expecting everything to feel like a nightmare. Unfortunately, it didn't. Her wedding dress still hung in the corner of her room. The flowers had already been delivered. The invitations had gone out. Her family had spent months preparing. And now everyone knew. The wedding was canceled By noon, the internet was filled with rumors. Some claimed Seraphina had been abandoned. Others blamed her. Her mother refused to leave the house. Elena stand beside her. “You don't have to explain yourself to anyone,” Elena said. Seraphina stared through the window. “I feel like everyone is looking at me.” “They are.” “That's comforting.” Elena sighed. “I mean, let them look. You know the truth.” Before Seraphina could answer, her phone rang. The same number from the previous night. Alexander Kingsley. She answered reluctantly. “Hello?” “Good morning.” “Why did you call me yesterday?” “I told you. I have a proposal.” “What kind of proposal?” “Meet me.” Seraphina hesitated. “Where?” “My office.” “I don't think that's a good idea.” “Then don't come.” She frowned. “You're very confident.” “I don't waste time.” “And you expect me to trust you?” “No.” His answer surprised her. “I don't expect you to trust me, Seraphina. I expect you to listen.” Two hours later, she found herself entering Kingsley Enterprises. The building was enormous. Employees moved quickly through the polished lobby. Everyone seemed to know exactly where they were going. Seraphina was led to the top floor. The receptionist opened a large office door. Alexander stood beside the window. He turned. For a moment, Seraphina forgot what she wanted to say. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His expression was calm and unreadable. “Sit.” Seraphina raised an eyebrow. “You could at least say hello.” “Hello.” She almost smiled. “You're difficult.” “So I've been told.” She sat. Alexander placed a folder on the desk. “I need a wife.” Seraphina stared at him. “What?” “A wife.” “You called me here to say that?” “I called you here because I want you to become my wife.” She stood immediately. “This is ridiculous.” “Sit down.” “No.” Alexander looked at her calmly. “One year.” She stopped. “One year?” “We marry legally. We remained married for twelve months. At the end of the contract, we divorce.” Seraphina laughed. “You're insane.” “I'll pay you.” Her expression changed. “I don't need your money.” “I know.” “Then why me?” Alexander's face became serious. “Because you're the only woman I know who needs something from me as much as I need something from her.” “What do I need?” “Protection.” Seraphina's smile disappeared. “What are you talking about?” Alexander opened the folder. Inside were documents about her family. Her father's company. Their debts. Their financial problems. Her eyes widened. “How did you get these?” “That's not important.” “It is to me.” Alexander leaned back. “Your family's company is about to collapse.” Seraphina's heart sank. She knew they were struggling, but she hadn't realized it was this serious. Alexander continued. “I can save it.” She looked at him. “And in exchange, I marry you?” “Yes.” “Why?” His expression became colder. “Because I need the world to believe I'm married.” Seraphina stared at him. “This is the strangest proposal I've ever heard.” “It is the only proposal I'm making.” She picked up the folder. “I need time.” “You have forty-eight hours.” She looked at him. “You really are impossible.” Alexander's lips curved slightly. “Perhaps.” As she walked toward the door, his voice stopped her. “Seraphina.” She turned. “Don't let Damian convince you that his betrayal was your fault.” Her eyes widened. “How do you know his name?” Alexande r said nothing. For the first time, Seraphina realized something. Alexander Kingsley knew far more about her life than he should.
