Chapter 4 — The Wedding The wedding was beautiful. Too beautiful for something that wasn't real. Seraphina stood before the mirror in her wedding gown, staring at herself. She should have been excited. Instead, she felt like she was walking into a storm. Elena adjusted her veil. “You can still change your mind.” Seraphina smiled weakly. “I know.” “Then why aren't you?” “Because my family needs me.” Elena hugged her. “Just promise me you'll be careful.” “I will.” The doors opened. Seraphina walked down the aisle. Alexander stood at the front. His eyes met hers. For a moment, the noise disappeared. He looked different today. Less like a billionaire. More like a man waiting for something he couldn't explain. When Seraphina reached him, he offered his hand. She took it. The ceremony began. When they exchanged rings, Alexander's fingers briefly touched hers. A strange warmth moved through her. She quickly pulled her hand away. Remember the contract. No feelings. After the ceremony, photographers surrounded them. “Mr. Kingsley, look this way!” “Mrs. Kingsley, smile!” Seraphina forced a smile. Alexander placed his hand gently at her waist. She whispered, “Do you have to do that?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because married couples do.” She glanced at him. “Right.” That evening, they arrived at Alexander's mansion. Seraphina stared at the enormous building. “This is your home?” “Yes.” “It looks like a hotel.” “I prefer privacy.” Inside, a housekeeper greeted them. “Welcome home, Mr. and Mrs. Kingsley.” Seraphina smiled awkwardly. Alexander noticed. “You'll get used to it.” “I don't think I will.” He led her upstairs. “This is your room.” She opened the door. It was larger than her entire apartment. “Alexander…” “Yes?” “This is ridiculous.” “You're my wife now.” “Contract wife.” His expression changed slightly. “Still my wife.” She looked at him. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Alexander walked away. “Goodnight, Seraphina.” “Goodnight.” She closed the door. A few minutes later, she heard a loud crash downstairs. She hurried out. Alexander was standing in the hallway. A glass had fallen from his hand. His face was pale. “What happened?” “Nothing.” “You look like you've seen a ghost.” He stared at her. “Go back to your room.” Seraphina didn't move. Then she noticed something. A framed photograph on the table. A beautiful woman stood beside Alexander. And written beneath the photograph were two words: Clara Kingsley. Seraphina's h eart stopped. She remembered Damian's warning. Ask him what happened to his first fiancée
