CHAPTER 11: No More Control

775 Words
Ariana’s POV He didn’t step back. And this time… neither did I. The air between us felt heavier than before, charged with something neither of us was pretending to ignore anymore. “Ethan…” His name came out softer than I intended. His thumb brushed lightly against my jaw again, slower this time, like he wasn’t trying to stop himself anymore. “You keep asking me for the truth,” he said quietly. “I do.” “Then understand this first,” he added, his voice low. “Once I stop holding back… I won’t be able to control it.” My heart pounded harder. “Maybe I don’t want you to.” That was all it took. Something in his expression snapped. Not anger. Not hesitation. Control. Gone. His hand slid from my jaw to the back of my neck, pulling me closer before I could think twice. And then— He kissed me. Not like before. Not hesitant. Not careful. This was different. Real. His lips pressed against mine with a kind of intensity that made my breath catch instantly. It wasn’t rushed, but it wasn’t slow either—it was certain, like he had already made the decision long before this moment. For a second, I froze. Then I responded. My hands moved without thinking, gripping the front of his shirt as I leaned into him. The tension that had been building between us for so long finally broke, turning into something deeper, stronger, impossible to ignore. He pulled me closer, like distance itself had become a problem. And I didn’t stop him. I couldn’t. When he finally pulled back, it wasn’t far. His forehead rested lightly against mine, both of us breathing unevenly. “This is exactly what I was trying to avoid,” he murmured. I swallowed, my heart still racing. “Does it look like you’re avoiding it?” A faint, almost breathless huff escaped him. “No.” For a moment, neither of us moved. Then his expression shifted slightly, something more serious replacing the intensity. “This changes things,” he said. “It already did,” I replied. His gaze searched mine, like he was trying to decide something. “You don’t understand what this means,” he added. “Then explain it,” I challenged. Silence. Then he stepped back. The distance felt wrong immediately. Too sudden. Too cold. “That’s exactly why this is a problem,” he said. Frustration flared. “You can’t kiss me like that and then act like it didn’t happen.” “I’m not acting like it didn’t happen,” he replied. “Then what are you doing?” “Trying to keep you safe.” “There you go again,” I snapped. “Everything is always about ‘keeping me safe.’ What about what I want?” His jaw tightened. “And what do you want, Ariana?” I didn’t hesitate this time. “You.” The word hung between us. Clear. Honest. Dangerous. Something in his expression shifted again—deeper this time. But instead of stepping closer— He turned away. My chest tightened instantly. “Ethan.” He ran a hand through his hair, his shoulders tense. “You don’t get it.” “Then make me get it!” He turned back sharply. “You being close to me puts you directly in her line of fire,” he said, his voice sharper now. “Vanessa doesn’t lose. She escalates.” “I’m already in it!” I shot back. “Walking away now doesn’t change anything.” Silence. Because we both knew that was true. His gaze softened slightly, but the tension didn’t leave. “That’s what I was afraid of,” he said quietly. I stepped closer this time. Not him. Me. “If you’re going to protect me,” I said, “then stop pushing me away while doing it.” His eyes locked on mine. “Because I’m not going anywhere.” The words felt final. Real. For a moment, he just looked at me. Then slowly… He stepped back toward me again. Close enough that I could feel that same pull returning. “You don’t make this easy,” he said. “I’m not supposed to.” A faint, almost reluctant smile touched his lips. Then it disappeared just as quickly. “This isn’t over,” he added. “I know.” Because now— It wasn’t just tension anymore. It wasn’t just confusion. It was something real. Something dangerous. Something neither of us could walk away from. And somewhere out there— Vanessa was still watching.
