CHAPTER 7

1050 Words
The nights became a torment, each passing moment a relentless reminder of my fractured past. Days melded into an indistinguishable blur as I grappled with the shadows that lingered in the corners of my consciousness. Survival in this unforgiving forest had already proven itself to be a formidable test, but the haunted dreams made it an unbearable ordeal. My mate’s constant torturing made me pray for death that didn’t come. The moon goddess was being unfair in my case and it made me angry. My wolf, Alexa, kept a watchful eye, sensing the distress that clung to my every breath. I felt it again, Tobias was being unfaithful and the pains were slowly coming in. "Freya, stay strong" she encouraged me as well, her voice a gentle murmur and the pain evident in it. She was also in pain. I felt so bad for her. Why couldn’t Tobias just reject me once and for all? Why is he doing this to me? To us? I managed to gasp out a response, "Mate bond... broken." Understanding flashed in her mind. She knew the tales, the stories of how the mate bond could unravel, leaving one half in excruciating pain. To witness me, writhing in the shadows of my own memories, was a cruel spectacle. As the night pressed on, the pain intensified, each wave crashing against the shore of my own resilience. Alexa growled. The moon hung overhead, casting an ethereal glow on the torment etched across my features. The forest, usually teeming with the symphony of nocturnal life, now echoed with my cries of anguish. Alexa begged to be released, so she could run and maybe relieve the pain but I couldn’t let that happen. If she ever runs, she’ll end up ramming herself in a tree to feel the physical pain. She kept pleading and pleading that I had to consider her feelings and I agreed, I let her take over. And as expected, she rammed herself into the big oak tree before me and just like that, we both passed out. Dawn tiptoed across the sky, painting it with hues of orange and pink, but the ethereal light did little to alleviate the ache in my heart. My body lay limp, drained from the relentless assault. Alexa, on the other end was silent as well. I stirred, the weight of the night etched on my face. Pushing myself into a sitting position, I whispered, "Alexa, what was that? Why did you have to do such risky things?" Alexa hesitated, her eyes reflecting a mixture of empathy and sorrow, "Freya, when the mate bond is broken through infidelity, the pain is transferred to the innocent party. It's a cruel consequence, a reminder of betrayal. So I had to do what I did to relieve the pains'' My gaze fell to the ground, the revelation settling like a heavy stone in my chest. "Tobias," I murmured, his name carrying a mix of resentment and sorrow. The memories of the past flashed in my mind, and the pain lingered as a phantom ache. Again, days blurred into one another, the forest a silent witness to all my endless struggles. I withdrew into myself, grappling with the emotional wreckage of the broken mate bond. Alexa remained a loyal presence, offering silent companionship amid the dense foliage. One morning, as sunlight filtered through the leaves, I emerged from my cocoon of space. My eyes, once clouded with pain, held a glint of determination. "I won't let Tobias define my existence again," I declared, my voice carrying a newfound strength. "He keeps hurting us and we can’t let this continue to happen" "And what do you plan to do? Mate with someone else? In this forest? Or maybe a hunter! Oh please Frey’s. We’ve been in here for a month now, have you seen anyone other than the wild animals?" Alex asked smugly and I sighed. She just didn’t know how to comfort someone sometimes. Without arguing, I continued walking around, at least to find breakfast. From evading territorial predators to overcoming treacherous terrains, every obstacle became a stepping stone. One evening, as we reached the edge of a cascading waterfall, I paused to catch my breath. The roaring water mirrored the tumultuous emotions within me. I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty that existed even in the heart of the forest. The water looked very beautiful and calm. "Alexa," I said, my eyes fixed on the cascading water, "we may be lost in this forest, I know we’ll leave here one day. So please try to stay strong" She rolled her eyes. "I’m the strong one here, remember?" I shook my head and ignored her. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow upon the waterfall, I found solace in the rhythmic sounds of the water. Then, I began to cry again. Memories came back to me. The suffering I went through in the past few months. "He's not worth your tears, Freya," Alexa reminded after a while of silence, her voice a soft howl that echoed through the quiet space. "We can forge our path, you know, one without the shadows of this disgusting betrayal." I nodded, the weight of her words resonating within me. The bond between us, unbroken and unyielding, was a testament to the strength that could rise from the ruins of a shattered mate bond. "He may have chosen his own part, which to me is stupidly stupid" I chuckled at her words. She continued, "but that doesn't diminish our strength or worth," Alexa insisted. "We’re not murderers and f**k them for believing that" She added again and I laughed this time. She laughed with me too. "Freya soak yourself in that water" she pleaded suddenly and I smiled. That was exactly what I had in mind, so I complied. I shredded my clothes and walked into the water. Soaking myself in it and letting the coldness sip In. Alexa moaned in pleasure. In the quiet of the night, under the watchful gaze of the moon and the moon goddess of course, I found solace in this cold water. I knew that whatever lay ahead, I was not alone. Alexa's presence was a beacon in the darkness, illuminating the path to resilience and self-discovery.
