When I asked about Cathy, Hailey gave a rueful smile and shook her head in disbelief.
"Cathy's background is pretty messed up. Her dad was a drunk who often beat her mom. Before marrying her dad, her mom had an affair with a married man. That man's wife publicly humiliated her and even crippled her. That's when she ended up marrying Cathy's father. After getting married, her mom took on a 'what the hell' attitude. After all, the man she had been involved with was at least good-looking. But now, having a crippled leg and marrying an unattractive drunk, she felt like life was no longer worth living."
"Sounds like she was trouble from the start," I remarked disdainfully.
