“Come,” he said, motioning me to join him at the window. “The sight of New York in the rain always strikes me as a battle of the elements.” He took my hand and drew me forward. “Out there, steel and stone skyscrapers do battle with water and the howling wind. It’s a war unlike any other.” “I suppose so, Master,” I said cautiously. “It is not something I’ve thought of in those terms.” His voice sounded so casual, but I wondered what was really happening.
