Christmas with the In-Laws

Emma sat in the passenger seat of Kathy’s car, her head pressed against the window. It had been a long, tiring ride across the country—they’d started at six in the morning, right before dawn, and they were now pushing evening. The sun had long since begun its descent behind the snow-capped hills in front of them, and the street lamps had already been turned on.
The road stretched on for miles around them, empty except for themselves, and, although she usually loved nature, Emma couldn’t help but feel lonely in the expansive countryside.
