A Queen Among Snakes - First Encounter with the Volkovs

1961 Words
Leander's mind raced as he considered his next move. He knew the Volkovs were trying to provoke him, to make him reveal his true feelings for Dior. But he wasn't about to give them that satisfaction. Instead, he decided to play their game, turning their assumptions into a strategic advantage. He picked up his phone and sent a text to Lucius, instructing him to spread a rumor around the criminal underworld. "Tell them Dior is nothing but a convenient distraction. A pretty face to warm my bed at night." He smirked. The Volkovs high-fived each other, celebrating what they thought was a brilliant plan. "He treats her like s**t," one of them said, reading the rumors online. "She's just a w***e to him," another responded, laughing. "This is gonna be easy.” As the months passed, Leander acted colder towards Dior, ignoring her presence more than usual. He wanted the Volkovs to believe the rumors, to think he was growing bored with her. Dior, however, began to withdraw, misinterpreting his cold shoulder as disinterest. One evening, as Dior worked late, her typing slowing down due to her distress over Leander's apparent indifference, the office door suddenly slammed open. In strode Luke Volkov, his cold eyes locking onto Dior with a predatory grin. "Well, well, well… looks like the great Leander has finally tossed you aside," Luke haunted, circling Dior slowly like a shark. "Must hurt, being just another conquest to him. Tell me, sweetheart, do you need a real man to make you feel appreciated?”. Dior's expression shifted from anger to an icy determination. She straightened up, her voice growing colder and more confident. "You think you can just waltz in here and disrespect me? I may be Leander's assistant, but I'm not some fragile doll.” Dior stepped closer to Luke, her eyes gleaming with a fiery intelligence few people ever got to see. She was done being intimidated by him. Dior stood her ground, glaring up at Luke defiantly. She may not have known the extent of Leander's power or the true nature of his business dealings, but she wasn't about to let anyone, especially a Volkov, push her around. "Get out of my office." Luke stared at Dior incredulously, a flush creeping up his neck. He hadn't expected such brass from Leander's assistant. With a last attempt to regain control, he leaned in close, voice low and threatening. "Careful, bitch.” Dior didn't flinch. Instead, she met Luke's gaze with a steely resolve. "I said, get out of my office. I have work to do, and you're wasting my time." She turned her back on him, walking back to her desk with a confident stride. Luke clenched his fists, fuming at being dismissed so casually. He stood there a moment longer, hoping to intimidate her. But Dior simply sat down, resumed typing, and utterly ignored him. With a growl of frustration, Luke stormed out, slamming the door behind him. As the door slammed shut, Dior allowed herself a small, triumphant smile. She leaned back in her chair, savoring the sweet taste of victory. Luke Volkov, infamous for his arrogance and ruthlessness, had just been put firmly in his place by none other than Leander's personal assistant. News of the incident spread quickly through the offices. Employees whispered among themselves, amazed that Dior had stood up to a Volkov. Leander's assistant was no longer just seen as his right hand - she was now regarded with a newfound respect and a hint of awe. Later that day, Leander returned from his meeting, his expression unreadable as always. He passed by the whispering employees without a word, making his way directly to Dior's office. He entered without knocking, closing the door softly behind him. Leander stood there for a moment, observing Dior as she worked. There was something different about her today - a quiet confidence that seemed to radiate from her. He walked over to her desk, leaning against it casually. "I heard you had a visitor today," he said, voice low and even. Leander's expression remained impassive, but his eyes glinted with amusement and something else - pride, perhaps. He pushed off from the desk, walking around to stand behind Dior's chair. "And how exactly did you manage to send him away empty-handed?” Dior swiveled her chair to face Leander, her smirk widening. "He asked who I was, and I told him I was your assistant. He demanded information, thinking he could bully me into cooperating. I simply told him that you don't share your schedule with anyone,” Leander raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "And how did he take that?" he asked, already knowing the answer but wanting to hear it from her. Dior shrugged nonchalantly. "Not well. He tried to intimidate me, but I didn't budge. He left in a huff after I made it clear he wasn't getting anything from me." She turned back to her computer, saving her work before looking up at Leander again. Leander studied her profile for a moment, impressed. Most assistants would have crumbled under Luke's pressure. Instead, she held her ground - and for reasons he didn't quite understand, that made something stir within him. "You did well today," he said quietly. "Very well.” Dior felt his approval like a physical warmth, but she kept her expression neutral. "Thanks," she murmured, focusing back on her screen. Leander's praise was rare, so she knew it wasn't given lightly. He remained standing behind her chair, his silence unnerving. After a prolonged moment, Leander spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper. "Volkovs are not used to being refused. Expect more visits, more attempts to influence." He paused, hand resting lightly on Dior's chair. "If he comes again, don't hesitate to call security.” Dior nodded, absorbing his warning. "Understood," she said curtly, already planning how she would handle future encounters with Luke Volkov. Leander straightened up, his fingers drumming on the back of her chair before he finally stepped away. "And Dior,” Leander paused, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "Next time, don't hesitate to tell him to f**k off if he gets out of line." He turned to leave, then stopped at the door and glanced back at her. "You handled yourself well today. Keep it up.” Dior watched him walk out, a slow smile spreading across her face. "Damn right I handled him well," she murmured softly to herself. She went back to work, answering emails and scheduling meetings. Her phone buzzed suddenly - an unknown number. She picked it up warily. "Hello?” A smooth, unfamiliar voice floated through the phone. "Miss Dior, I presume? This is Alexei Volkov speaking." Dior froze, recognizing the name immediately. Luke's sister, perhaps even more notorious. "I heard you gave my brother quite the lecture today. Impressive.” Dior's grip tightened on the phone. She remembered Leander's warning - expect more visits, more attempts to influence. Alexei’s call was likely one of those attempts. "If you're calling to threaten me like your brother did, save your breath," she said coolly. Alexei chuckled, the sound sending an involuntary shiver down Dior's spine. "Threaten you? Darling, I'm calling to congratulate you. Standing up to Luke takes balls - or ovaries, in your case." She paused. "I like you already.” Dior's eyebrows arched skeptically. She wasn't falling for any Volkovs charm, no matter how smooth the delivery. "Congratulations or not, I'm hanging up now. Don't call again." She moved to end the call when Alexei's next words stopped her. Alexei's tone shifted, becoming more serious. "Wait, wait, wait. Before you hang up, let me make something clear. I'm not Luke. I don't play games or make idle threats." She paused briefly. "I just wanted to meet the woman who stood up to my brother.” Dior hesitated, intrigued despite herself. The Volkov siblings were infamous, but Alexei was known for her sharp business acumen, not brute force like Luke. "Well, now you've met me. Satisfied?" she asked dryly, tapping her pen against the desk. Alexei laughed softly, a sound that was surprisingly pleasant. "Not quite. I'd like to take you out for coffee sometime. Just to talk." She added quickly, "No strings attached, I promise. I'm genuinely curious about the woman who can handle Luke Volkov.” Dior's eyebrows furrowed, suspicion coloring her voice. "Coffee, huh? You expect me to believe that's all you want? Are you expecting me to sit down with a Volkov and have a friendly chat over lattes?" She scoffed. Alexei's response was immediate, her tone earnest. "I swear on my mother's grave, there will be no hidden agenda, no tricks, no ulterior motives. Just coffee and conversations. If you don't believe me, bring a friend, bring security, I don't care. Just meet me.” Dior mulled over her words, glancing at her calendar. She had nothing pressing tomorrow afternoon. Against her better judgment, curiosity got the better of her. "Fine. One coffee. Tomorrow, 2 PM. Cafe Noir downtown. And Alexei? Don't make me regret this.” Alexei's face broke into a rare smile as she hung up the phone. She had her agreement, which was more than she expected. She arrived at Cafe Noir the next day promptly at 2 PM, dressed casually in a red dress. As she sat waiting, she noticed Dior entering the cafe, her sharp business attire a stark contrast to the cozy atmosphere. She spotted her and made her way over, a neutral expression on her face. Behind her, a tall, muscular man in a suit followed - likely her security detail. Alexei stood as she approached, extending a hand in greeting. "Dior, thank you for meeting me," she said, her eyes flicking briefly to the security man before returning to her face. "And this must be your... escort?" She raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in her voice. Dior ignored the amusement in her tone, gesturing to the security man. "Meet Xavier, my head of security. He goes everywhere with me." She sat down, crossing her legs and folding her arms. "Now, let's get this over with.” Alexei's gaze sharpened slightly as she looked at Dior, her mind racing to process this new information. If she was Leander's assistant, then she was likely untouchable - or at least, Luke wouldn't dare lay a finger on her without facing Leander's wrath. Alexei leaned forward, her eyes glinting with unspoken questions. "Let me get this straight, you're Leander's right hand. You handle his schedule, his communications, his... everything." She paused, watching her reaction closely. "That means you're practically his shadow.” Dior leaned back casually in her chair, a small smirk playing at the corners of her mouth. "Astute observation," she replied coolly. "Leander trusts me implicitly with all aspects of his business. So, what's your point, Alexei?" Her eyes narrowed slightly, daring her to continue. Alexei leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial tone. "Have you ever wondered why that is? Why does someone so powerful keep himself hidden?" She watched Dior's expression carefully, looking for any sign of discomfort or surprise. "Some people whisper that he's not just a businessman.” Dior's expression remained impassive, but her eyes flashed with a warning. "And what do these people whisper exactly?" she asked, her voice steady. Alexei's lips curved into a smirk, her eyes never leaving Dior's face. "They whisper that Leander... is not just a boss, but the mafia boss." She leaned back, crossing her arms with a challenging smirk. Before Dior could respond, a sudden chill filled the air. The atmosphere shifted dramatically as a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the shadows.
