There was a knock on the door, and I woke up with a splitting headache. I groaned, rubbing my eyes as a man in a crisp suit walked into my room.
"Mr. Carter sent this for you," he said politely. He rolled in a silver cart with a full, steaming breakfast spread.
"Where is he?" I asked, my voice raspy.
The man kept completely quiet.
"I'll take my leave now," was all he said, bowing his head before leaving the room. "I'll return for the plates later."
I didn't bother following him. I ate my breakfast in silence, then went into Bruce's bathroom to take a long, hot shower. The scent of his expensive cologne was everywhere, making my stomach flip, but I tried to wash the thoughts away.
An hour later, I got to school. The moment I walked onto the main quad, I noticed a massive crowd of students gathering around the building. Everyone had their phones out, recording and whispering.
There were loud gasps of shock echoing through the air.
I tried to look over the crowd, but I was too short to see over anyone's shoulders.
"What's happening?" I asked a random girl standing next to me.
"It's Professor Jenkins," she whispered back, her eyes wide. "The police have been inside his office for the past hour."
Just then, the crowd parted slightly. I watched in total shock as two police officers dragged Professor Jenkins out of the building in handcuffs, right in front of everyone. He looked completely pale and ruined.
"Oh my god, it's actually true," a guy near me muttered to his friend, typing furiously on his phone.
"What's true?" I asked, leaning closer to them. "What did he do?"
"Someone leaked everything from his personal computer," the guy explained, turning to me. "He literally just tendered his resignation like ten minutes ago because he got caught red-handed. The school was trying to cover it up, but it's too late."
"Caught doing what?"
"Malpractice, for starters," his friend chimed in, shaking her head in disgust. "But it gets way worse. They found files and files of s****l involvement with students. He was coercing girls into bed for good grades, and they found actual s*x tapes saved on his system."
"No way," I gasped, a chill running down my spine. Jenkins was a seasoned, highly respected professor on this campus.
"Yes way," the girl said, pointing at her screen. "It's all over the campus forums already. Someone completely wiped his drive and sent the evidence straight to the dean and the police. Whoever did it just completely destroyed his entire life."
I stared at Jenkins as the police shoved him into the back of a squad car.
The police car drove away with its sirens wailing, leaving the entire campus in absolute chaos.
---
Since the whole school was in a complete chaos, the administration was running around frantically. They were trying to stop the story from leaking out to the press, but it was already too late. I could already tell that wealthy parents would be in a total frenzy, and the victims would definitely be looking to the school for major reparations.
I was free.
I walked over to the campus cafe, because obviously, there wasn't going to be any actual class today. The professors were all in emergency meetings. I sat down at a corner table, trying to process everything, when a shadow suddenly fell over me.
Latoya came up to my table and folded her arms tightly across her chest. "You must really have a f*****g guardian angel," she hissed.
I sighed deeply, not even looking up at her. "What is your problem, Latoya? I am really not in the mood today."
"How the f**k do you end up so lucky all the time, you b***h!" she said through gritted teeth, slamming her hands down and sat directly across from me.
"What are you even talking about?" I asked, completely confused by her anger.
"Jenkins, you dummy!" Latoya snapped, her face turning red. "Do you have any idea what I had to do with that sleazy bastard just to make him fail you?"
"What?!" I screamed, my voice echoing through the cafe. I leaned forward, my heart hammering in my chest. "You're the reason he failed me? You actually slept with him just so he would ruin my grade? This is way beneath you, Latoya. This is insane."
"You don't know anything about what's above or beneath me!" she screamed back. I could see tears of pure frustration pricking her eyes. "I hate you!"
She stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floor and stormed away.
"What was that all about?" Liam asked, rushing over as he and Nevaeh walked into the cafe.
"Pure insanity," I responded, rubbing my temples.
"Yeah, no kidding," Nevaeh chimed in, pulling out a chair. "The whole school is in absolute chaos right now. Do you believe this s**t? Professor Jenkins! I honestly didn't know he had it in him to be that disgusting."
I rolled my eyes. "Good riddance."
"Wait," Liam said, leaning in close across the table. "Weren't you just in his class?"
I nodded slowly. "Just yesterday, he literally asked for my coochie on a silver platter in exchange for an A."
Nevaeh gasped, covering her mouth. "Are you serious?"
"It gets worse," I whispered. "Latoya was just here. She admitted that she was the one who asked him to fail me. And she paid him in kind to do it."
"Wait, what the f**k?" Liam's jaw dropped.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"What the hell is wrong with her? How far will that girl go just to ruin your life?" Liam stood up, his face turning bright red with anger. "I ought to go smack that b***h right now!"
I quickly reached up and pulled him back down by his shoulders. "Sit down. She's not worth it, Liam. Besides, it all worked out in the end for me anyway."
Just then, my phone started buzzing on the table. It was an unknown number. I pressed ignore, but a second later, a text message popped up on the screen.
[Come outside.]
My heart skipped a beat. "Could it be Bruce?"
I stood up immediately, leaving Liam and Nevaeh at the table, and walked out of the cafe.
"Kitty, wait," Marcus said, looking down at his shoes. "I'm so sorry about everything. Latoya lied to me about a lot of stuff. Can we please just talk? Let me take you out again."
I stared at him like he had two heads. "No. Are you completely mad?" I cussed him out right there. "Get the f**k away from me, Marcus."
"Oh, come on," Marcus said, his voice hardening. "You can't move on that fast. Is it because of that new guy? Because he's rich? I have money too, Kitty!" He was obviously talking about Hudson.
I scoffed loudly, crossing my arms. "Don't delude yourself. You don't have anything compared to him. Leave me alone."
Marcus got incredibly angry, his chest huffing and puffing as he stepped right into my personal space. He looked completely out of control, and for the first time, I felt real fear hit me.
"Move away from me, Marcus," I said, backing up.
"No, we are going to talk about this," he growled. He reached out, grabbed my arm in a death grip, and started pulling me forcefully toward his passenger door. "Get in the car."
"Let go of me!" I screamed, trying to twist out of his grip, but he was too strong.
Before Marcus could even take another step, two huge hands landed roughly on the collar of his shirt, ripping Marcus completely off the grass and tossed him away like a piece of trash. Marcus hit the dirt hard, groaning in pain.
I gasped and looked up. Standing right in front of me, breathing heavily with pure rage in his eyes, was Bruce.
