Chapter 16

Oh, how I detested that man! He chewed his food carefully before swallowing it. "The adjustments you've made are very slight. The most significant adjustment seems to be the addition of a clause stating that the contract must be reviewed and extended after a period of one year. That is completely acceptable to me. You would like the medical clause to become effective as soon as the contract is signed, right? After looking at me for a considerable amount of time, he then signaled to a passing waiter who immediately stood to attention. He inquired, "Could I borrow a pen if you have one?" The blood on my face began to flow away. Surely he didn't intend for it to happen...? But he did. Right in front of me, Silva Bryan took out a ballpoint pen from the waiter's pocket and initialed and signed each clause and page of the document before signing it and dating it. He moved it to the other side of the table. I was transfixed by it. It appeared to be staring back at me. I put my mind to it, and it vanished. The answer is no. I put out my hand and finished off the wine in my glass. "Are you not ready to sign this agreement today?" When Waters inquired. I stuffed it down. “I...” My mind was racing with a million different ideas at once. My whole existence could shift with only the click of a cheap Bic ballpoint pen, and I wouldn't even have to try. My mother would be through chemotherapy, my father would be getting back into the industry he had left, and I would be forced to marry a man I didn't even know. The world started to get darker in the periphery of my vision. I made an effort to take a full breath, but it seemed as though something heavy had descended onto my chest instead. "Miss Wayne?" My attention was drawn to a movement taking place across from me. Bryan had gotten up from his seat by this point. I was at a loss for words until I felt the booth dip, and he slid in next to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and protecting me from the other diners in the room. After that, I understood how to respond. Oh, excellent, he was feeling powerful, warm, and good. It's possible that I might have appreciated the closeness more if the circumstances had been different and if he hadn't been such a jerk. It would have been helpful for me to be able to depend on him and take solace in the fact that he was so strong. I might have been able to give him my trust and let him shoulder all of my responsibilities. But all that happened was that it made me more nervous. My heartbeat quickened to match its pace. "Let's not pretend," he said. "Find something to read." He then poured me another glass of wine as he reached out to me. "I'm the one you need, and you're the one I want." "You don't want me," I said. "You want a lady that is dependent on you," she said. "At this point in time, I do not differentiate between the two." He picked up the glass of wine and walked near me while pressing me to take a sip. I removed the glass from his grasp and placed it on the table before continuing. I caught a glimpse of him moving his head out of the corner of my eye. He said, "I like to see you fight it. It's entertaining." "Just as I enjoyed it when you were thinking about me while you were fingering yourself in my elevator," he said. Cameras for surveillance Of course. I was overcome with a sense of mortification. I tensed up, and he moved closer to me. It felt like his lips were brushing towards my ear. "When you give up control of your life, you become beautiful." I snapped at him, "Don't feel so smug," even as he moved his lips to the spot just below my earlobe. "Don't feel so smug." "I haven't had a date in the past six months—oh..." My heart was thumping wildly as Silva Bryan put his warm, tender tongue against it. My body disintegrated into chills as I dissolved into his embrace. As I struggled to prevent myself from touching him, I put my hands on the table and tightly gripped the tablecloth. I began to pant as I realized that I was touching him. My knuckles itched with the want to feel him. The whole idea of tasting him made my lips swim with anticipation. He whispered his words to me as his breath brushed against my skin and murmured, "Our marriage would be good to both of us." "If I had to guess, I'd say you might even enjoy it." No, no, no, no, no... I mumbled under my breath, "No one would ever want to be coerced into having s*x for money."
