Chapter 11

Her brows furrowed in surprise. "And are you interested in marrying him?" I responded by telling her, "Not really." "However, if I were to do that, it would clear up a lot of issues." She gazed at me for a considerable amount of time. I could almost hear what she was thinking, which was not strange to me because I had also thought many of the same things myself at various points. At last, she indicated that I should have a seat, and I complied, happily falling into one of the luxurious leather chairs that were placed in front of her desk. She took a seat directly opposite me and started flipping through the contract. Although the room was rather silent, the pages rustled loudly, and I could hear the city going about its business outside of her office's heavy windows, where she had installed them. My dad spent his entire career working in London, but he did it while commuting from another state. The city of Leicester was currently where my mother called home. In normal circumstances, the sounds of the city serve as a source of solace for me; yet, as the duration of the pause between us increased, I found myself wishing that I had taken some headphones with me. Even better, I wouldn't have to connect them to anything by plugging them in. Put one of the ends in your pocket and act like you don't care how this crazy contract is making you seem. Just act as though I don't care about anything at all. I did my best to ignore the few times that she cleared her throat and looked at me, choosing instead to read the law books that lined her walls, which proved to be as bit as boring as I had anticipated they would be. After what seemed like an eternity, she put the contract away and folded her hands in front of her. It seemed as though she was looking for the right words. My stomach, which was still recovering from the punishment I'd put it through the previous night, tightened, and I tried to condense myself so that I could fit into my clothes. ""Miss Wayne," she finally concluded, "I can honestly say that I've never seen a contract quite like this one." I can only assume that the reasons you are contemplating it are valid ones, but in my professional view, this contract is not legally binding because it does not meet the requirements of a valid contract." I sat up. "So... you're saying that it's a kind of a loophole, right? Can I sign it, go through with the wedding, and then get divorced from him?" I could tell by the twist in her lips that her response wasn't going to be all that straightforward. "The fact that it is a prenuptial agreement in the most literal sense is, as you can see, the source of the difficulty. If you decide to end your marriage to Mr.Bryan for any reason, you will receive nothing in the settlement. That he wants you to, ah, allow him certain liberties and wishes to codify them into a contract, and that if you do not agree, he will have the option to end the marriage. If you do not agree, he will have the option to end the marriage." A frown wrinkled her face, moving along the lines that were already there. "Because the denial of one spouse would turn the s****l encounter in question into r**e rather than consensual s*x, prenuptial agreements containing s****l terms cannot be legally implemented. The law neither condones nor enforces r**e, hence these clauses are invalid. Should Mr. Bryan decide to file a lawsuit against you, this clause will be ruled unconstitutional by the judge hearing the case." I could feel the final sliver of hope sliding away from me as I held onto it. "However... wouldn't that render the entire contract null and void?" I inquired in a pleading tone. Ms. Ryan let out a sigh. "I'm afraid not. A severability clause has been incorporated into the document. In the event that a portion of the contract is found to be invalid, that portion of the contract will be eliminated, however The contract has not yet been rendered null and void. In light of this, if you opt to sign this contract, Mr. Bryan will have the right to end your marriage for any reason he sees fit, and you will be left with only the assets you had when you started the relationship. The identical thing will take place in the event that you dissolve the marriage." I bit my lip. I didn't enjoy this one bit. "In specific terms, what does it state?" She curled her fingers into a tight fist and sat back in her chair. "In any case, with the exception of the s****l provisions, it's pretty much the norm. Both sides are expected to uphold their end of the bargain. You will be provided a stipend that can be used for personal expenses, expenses related to your profession, and any other projects you decide to undertake. I'm afraid that in the event of Mr. Bryan passing, you wouldn't be entitled to very much at all. It appears that he also included a clause that states that you would receive nothing if there is any reason to assume that he is no longer alive." She gave it a whiff. "He is a very... meticulous man." I responded by saying, "You mean he's completely a bugfuck." Her response was very polite and proper: "I have not met him." "I have no doubt that you have additional information about that." "Yesterday was the first time I met him," I said. Her mouth became more slack, and it appeared as though she was considering something. She took a breath in and then leaned forward. "Miss wayne, may I speak with you in an honest manner?" Hooboy. It arrived just then. The lecture given by the mother. "Sure. Why shouldn't they?" She reached out and took a hold of the contract. "In terms of s****l perversions, the ones in this contract are very minor, I c****d one eyebrow in question. "Oh?" "Yes. There is nothing in this article regarding having s*x with animals or other people, or even a s****l schedule, both of which are topics that I have read about in other places. Well, maybe not the bit about having s*x with the animals, "She made the change. "That is a serious violation of the law. However, I agree with the other points. Are you interested in making money with this venture?" I felt like crying. "At this point, I'm not even sure if I'm going to continue with this." "But there has to be a valid explanation, right?" She gave me a sidelong glance before turning her attention back to me and saying, "There is a provision in the agreement that will pay for any necessary medical bills that you may incur. I brought this to your attention since I saw that it does not mention you by name as the person who received medical attention. Is that the case?" I nodded miserably. She proceeded to sit back down. "If that's the case, you ought to proceed." My jaw literally dropped to the floor. After closing it, I opened it up one more. "What, are you kidding?" I said. She nodded. "I am familiar with the name Silva Bryan. Most folks do. From what I can see, getting married so soon after starting a new job would be like putting the wagon before the horse, wouldn't it? You do not have any romantic interest in him at this time, correct?" No, not in a romantic sense at all. I smiled and shook my head. She gave the stack of papers in front of her a little pat. "The man who drafted this agreement is looking for a woman who will not betray him in any way. This not only suggests that he has a great deal of issues, but it also shows that he treats you more like an item than a person. The former does not provide an explanation for the later. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing in the entire world that should discourage you from obtaining as much as you can from him while you still have the opportunity. You have the potential to either establish a career as a result of this marriage or become a name that is extremely lucrative if you play your cards well. If you were to marry this man, the entire world would become your oyster. In the event that you were to divorce him, you would not be in financial jeopardy." Then she gave a shrug. "I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go through with the marriage if the s*x is enjoyable and you stand to gain something from the union." She smiled at me in that endearing way that librarians do.
