Chapter 7

He referred to it as a "contract for marriage" when he stated it. "I had the impression that your father would have shared that information with you." Oh my gosh. He was quite frustrating. And seductive. The heat from his body spread into the close quarters that separated us both. My shoulder came very close to brushing his chest, and I wished I had worn a thin skirt because I was almost positive that his knee was touching mine, but my clay-stained jeans were too thick to feel it. I also wished I had worn a thin skirt because I was almost certain that his knee was touching mine. In any case, my knee was tingling, which sent thrills up my leg. They curled in the hottest point of my thighs, wrapping around and under my legs in the process. I tried my best to ignore the sensation, but it persisted. "Yeah, I'm aware of it; nonetheless, why?" He shrugged. He stated, "I would like to have a wife." "And are you willing to take on the bad debt that my father has incurred for it?" He puckered his lips in a way that was far too exquisite to be a random move on his part. Despite this, however, I couldn't help but cast my attention in their direction. I had the want to trace my tongue down the seam of his mouth and coax it open, then I wanted to slither my tongue inside his mouth and compete with his. While staring at his face, I found myself unconsciously licking my own lips and doing so repeatedly. I quickly pulled my tongue between my teeth and raised my eyebrows as soon as I became aware of what I was doing. He appeared unfazed and wise as he looked back at me. "The debt that your father owes is not insurmountable," he told her. His company's name and... contacts are still enough to make it worthwhile. He stretched out and took the contract from me in an almost absent manner, twisting his wrist so that his fingers could slide over mine as he did so. The sudden sound of my blood hammering in my ears was what I heard myself gasping for air over. Deliberate and under complete control That accurately describes him. After placing the contract in front of me, he turned his attention back to me. His eyes wandered up to my hair, which was a tangled mess of dark chestnut curls that I was never able to tame and instead settled for piling on top of my head in the most haphazard manner possible. His gaze lingered there for a moment before moving on. I stretched out with one hand and tugged a curl out of the tangle that I had pinned it into earlier today. It would have been better for me to get up and go at that point. I should have punched him in the face. I really should have let out a scream. Instead, I gave in and allowed it. That sure was an idiotic move. His fingertips entangled themselves around the strand of hair. It seemed as if he were winding me around his fingers, turning me over and under and up and over again. My entire body was on fire, and both sets of my lips were swollen and in excruciating pain in anticipation of his kiss. I endeavored to make sense of the yearning that was taking shape in my stomach. "So... you end up with both the business that my father started and me. I, uh, I mean... it, uh, seems like a guy like you would have no trouble... whoa!" "I, uh, I mean... it, uh, seems like a guy like you would have no trouble." Anton Waters had gotten close enough to bury his face in my hair while he was leaning in. Even for me, this was a little bit of a stretch too far. I managed to get to my feet and grab the contract that was sitting on the table. "What in the world are you trying to accomplish?" I demanded. Now, for the very first time, he appeared to be somewhat surprised. He stated it as though it were self-evident, "seeing if we are sexually compatible with one another." "You have a really arrogant way of thinking, don't you? I haven't even confirmed that I want to get married to you yet! I yelled out loud. My legs were shaking, and although I wanted I could sit down again, I didn't want to appear weak in front of everyone. When he frowned, a very fine line developed in the space between his brows. The question that he posed to her was, "But why would you accept to marriage if you did not desire me sexually?" As if he were some kind of filthy robot. A robot that is smoking hot. "It seems prudent to get such things out of the way right off the bat before someone makes a decision they might later come to regret," He raised his chin and looked at me with an evaluative expression on his face. I could feel his gaze burning through my defenses like a blowtorch, peeling back my clothes to reveal my skin, and dissolving my bones. "In that aspect, I believe we would do fairly well for ourselves." Card picture cap Learning Cards Suitable for People of All Ages I did not want to give any thought to the possibility that this man desired me. No, I didn't allow myself to even consider it for a second. It was impossible to resist. It was imperative that I keep my attention on my aim. Which was... excuse me, what was it again? "Wait... and the reason you want an ar is because..." ranged marriage? You were able to snag any woman that you want. Yeah. That was the aspect of the whole situation that bothered me the most. Oh my God, I was such a moron. But at least it was a question, and I wasn't tearing all of his clothes off at that point. He showed a shrug. He stated, "Love or emotional attachment is not something I require from others." "But according to the terms of the contract, a wife would be perfect for my own requirements." I had not even bothered to read the contract. I didn't need to. It was completely out of the question for me to marry this man. "On what basis did you assume that I would consent to this?" I said. He furrowed his brows thoughtfully. He stated, "I feel that you are capable of evaluating the rewards for yourself." "The contract offers substantial clauses for your personal usage that you can take use of." I felt rage rising up inside of me. "f**k you," I said. "Like I would ever get married for money. Since my mother did not inherit any of his wealth, she is completely destitute. The hazy smile appeared once more. "Miss Dare, there is no money for you. Money for specific... causes that are dear to your heart." I had to force my air out. “What?” I said. "How on earth did you manage to learn anything about me?" In the same dispassionate manner, he continued, "I know a lot about you." "I am aware that you take pleasure in knitting, yet you frequently give up on your projects. I am aware that you frequently post anonymous remarks on other artists' websites that are really harsh. I am aware that you frequently feel inadequate to the point where you feel the need to anonymously respond to your own critiques. In addition to this, I am aware that you have only lately posted the words "eat the rich" in response to the most recent financial crisis on a website that leans to the left.
