Chapter 2: Bitter Pill. Raven's POV Hearing those words, it felt like the moon goodness was playing a cruel trick on me. I waited, for seconds, waiting for the time when Cesar would crack that laugh of his that has been gone for years and tell me that this was a bad joke. A teasing punishment for keeping the earlier symptoms of my pregnancy from him. But the punchline never came and soon, reality as it was, set in. “W-what?” I shook my head, furiously, while tears gathered in my bottom lid. “This can’t be Cesar. I’m…I’m your wife…your mate…you can’t-“ My stuttering words seemed to annoy Cesar, because the very next second, he snapped, loudly, voice filled to the brim with scorn. “Enough, Raven, You’ve never been more than a placeholder. Selene,” he paused as be called her name and she wasted no time in slipping back into the arms of my husband. My heart clenched at the sight. “Selene here, is the love of my life,” The love of his life? I vaguely recalled hearing around the lack that Cesar harbored feelings for someone, a princess from another pack. However, on the day of the mating ceremony, I turned out to be his mate, rather than the princess and with shame, she ran away. So, was this her? The one whose shadow I have always lived in? “And now that she’s back,” Cesar continued, uttering the remaining words that broke me. “You’re no longer needed. Selene will give me the son I’ve always wanted,” he said, his tone final. “something you’ve never been able to.” Unconsciously, my hand went to my stomach. If only Cesar knew, would he take back his words? Selene who seemed to be enjoying the show, smirked at me, her hand sliding up Cesar’s arm possessively. “You should accept it, Raven. Your time here is over.” Her action caused the ache in my chest to increase. I was aware Cesar didn’t see me as a wife, nor did he love me, but to do something like this wasn’t it too cruel? How could he push me aside like I was nothing after the years were spent together? I needed answers, needed to understand why the man I had pledged my life to, the man who had been fated to me as my mate, was turning his back on me so cruelly. “Why, Cesar?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “Why are you doing this to me?” He glanced at me, his expression cold and unfeeling. “You really don’t get it, do you, Raven? You’ve been nothing but a disappointment to me, to this pack. You’re barren, useless, unable to give me the heir I need. You were just a means to an end when I needed to ascend to the throne and now that all that is out of the way, you’re useless.” His words hit me like ’ physical blow. Barren. Useless. Was that all I was to him? The tears welled up again, and I choked back a sob, trying to find the strength to stand up for myself, for the life growing inside me. “Cesar, I…” I started, but before I could finish, Selene interrupted, stepping forward with a predatory gleam in her eyes. “Don’t bother, Raven,” she said with a sneer. “Cesar has made his choice. You were never the right fit for him. But I am. I’ve promised him a son, an heir to carry on his legacy. Something you could never do.” Her words cut deep, not because they were true, but because she knew nothing of the truth. Through the pain, I glared at her, the anger I had been holding back finally breaking free. “You don’t know anything, Selene,” I spat, taking a step forward. “You have no right to speak to me like that.” “Oh, I have every right,” Selene shot back, her eyes flashing with anger. “You’re nothing, Raven. Nothing but a barren, useless—” The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them. “Shut up!” And with that, I slapped her across the face, the sound echoing through the room. For a split second, everything froze. Selene’s hand flew to her cheek, her eyes wide with shock. But then, just as quickly, her shock turned to rage. “You little—” she began, but before she could finish, Cesar stepped forward, his face twisted in fury. “How dare you,” he snarled, and before I could react, his hand came down hard across my face, the force of the slap sending me staggering backward. The pain was immediate and sharp, radiating through my entire body. I looked up at him, my cheek throbbing, tears stinging my eyes. But what hurt more than the physical pain was the look in his eyes—pure, unadulterated hatred. I had never seen him look at me like that before, and it shattered the last shred of hope I had been clinging to, that somewhere deep down, he still cared about me. “You’re a disappointment, Raven,” he spat, his eyes filled with disgust. “You’ve always been a disappointment. No Alpha would ever want an omega as useless as you,” Cesar said, eyes burning with hatred and distaste as he started right at me, ignoring the pain and hurt that was written on my face. “I should have gotten rid of you a long time ago. But it’s not too late,” Stepping forward, he held his chin high, a sign that he was about to make a dire decision, one that I have always feared. “I, Cesar Throne, Alpha of Throne pack, reject you, Raven Blackwood, as my mate and Luna!” At his declaration, a searing pain pierced through my chest, and I fell to the ground, clutching at my heart. Tears blurred my vision as the full impact of his rejection hit me. I could feel our bond shattering, the threads that had tied us together for so long unraveling until there was nothing left. My howl of pain filled the air, but Cesar didn’t flinch. Instead, he barked out, calling the guards in. “Take her out of my sight.” He instructed and turned to me, once again, ignoring the obvious pain I was in. “As of this moment, Raven Blackwood, you are not to step foot in this house, as it’s a place for me and my mate, the Luna of this pack.” At his declaration, I couldn’t help but wince. Even though Cesar didn’t know, he just condemned me to leave the place that has been my home, where I was supposed to raise my child with him, our child. However, his rejection was clear. He didn’t care for the child and he didn’t care for me. The guards stepped forward, their faces expressionless as they gripped my arms, forcing me to stand. “Let go of me!” I screamed, struggling against their hold, but it was no use. They were stronger than me, and with my weakened state, it was easy for them to drag me out of the house. The door slammed behind me, the sound reverberating in my bones, and I was left alone, abandoned by the one person who was supposed to love and protect me.
