Suzanne's pov:
I woke up that morning, exhausted from yesterday's work but fully determined to do better today.
My eyes darted across the room and it looked different. I didn't see Tavons belongings, but he had slept next to me last night, even if I didn't let him touch me.
That scumbag!!! Only lord knew where his d**k had been.
I stood up and checked the wardrobe but his clothes were absent. Then it dawned on me that he had finally abandoned us. I and Kai were now all that we had.
My heart broke into countless pieces, but then my phone dinged and I picked it up. I saw pictures of Tavon and another woman. Her face was unrevealing but her physique looked so hot.
The caption said: “Tavon and his newfound love”
I didn't want to but my fingers mistakenly swiped up and I saw another one.
“Tavon and his new love on a holiday” then a video of Tavon saying she gave him everything he needed to be a man.
My heart broke more and more as I read this. The room suddenly became so lonely and too small. I fell on my knees and wanted to scream but covered my mouth when Kai moved on his bed and made sounds.
I walked towards him to make sure he was okay. My five-year-old boy was deeply asleep so I heaved a sigh of relief.
At least my son is okay, what would I have done if he weren't?
I walked back to prepare breakfast and packed his lunch bag. I still had a job that paid me, I could save up and use that to get a smaller apartment since Tavon had left.
A surge of determination enveloped my being and I made everything ready for me and Kai for the day. I did my best to get Kai to school and began heading to work.
As I approached the entrance to the saloon, the property owner was standing in front of the shop, ordering boys to pack my things out.
“What are you doing sir?” I questioned, stopping one of the boys from carrying my hair steamer. “Why are you doing this sir? I have told you I will pay you by the month's end.”
“Take your hands off me, Suzanne,” he walked away from me.
My heart ached, why was all this happening to me?
“I have given you plenty of time Suzanne, I cannot continue to lose money.” he waved his hand with his backwoods in his hand smoking and walking away from me.
When we arrived at his car I held his hand, “Please sir, I don't have any other source of income and my husband just abandoned me and Kai, don't do this.”
But he only shook his head, dipped his hand in his pocket and gave me $500. I took the money without wasting a second because I needed it.
However, this only meant one thing, he wasn't going to change his mind even if he liked me.
I nodded to him after taking the money and turned around. ‘Where do I go from here, how does my new life begin with $500 and $350 in my account.’
As I headed home, I felt dizzy, I tried not to cry in public. But the more I tried the harder it became.
Then, a call came in. “Hello, are you Suzanne? Kai's mom?” the voice asked. “Yes, I am. And you are?” I responded.
“No time to explain ma'am, meet me at the NYC Health hospital as soon as possible.” I gasped, but I quickly used my hands to cover my wide-open mouth.
I smartly took a cap to the hospital. On getting there, Stella, my best friend, was already there and she was panicking.
“What is wrong, Stella?” I asked with a frigid voice. “It's Kai. He… the Doctor said…” I pushed her aside and ran into the emergency unit to find my son on oxygen.
I wanted to get into the room but the doctor and Stella held me back. “What has happened to my son?” I cried. “Calm down ma'am. This is a public place, let us speak in my office.”
I looked into the doctor's eyes and I couldn't read how deep the situation really was. This made me more frightened, but I composed myself and followed him to his office.
“Sit down ma'am,” the doctor offered and took his seat after shutting the door, meanwhile Stella waited outside.
“Maam, your son has been diagnosed with cirrhosis.” my eyes popped and I stilt. “What?” came out of my mouth, my heart thumping loud.
“We have good surgeons that can help your son, but…” From here on all he said was echoing in my ear, my vision became blurry and all I could hear was my heartbeat.
“Madam, can you hear me?” he yelled. “I'm sorry sir, what were you saying?” I asked pleadingly, joining both hands.
“I said we need a sum of two million dollars for the surgery to be carried out. I will also suggest that the earlier you clear the bill the better, to save your son.”
“I understand sir,” I said weakly. At this junction, I was frustrated and weak. Who would save me from this mess? This is my pride and joy we are talking about, the only one who has made me smile all through my marriage with Tavon, my son.
My thoughts grew wild and my frustration increased as I walked to the reception to sit. I needed to find the momentum to digest the reality of my current situation and find a way to save my son. I was not going to lose him.
Just then I heard Stella call my name; “Suzanne, I have been looking for you. I was waiting in the other waiting room, what did the doctor say? Will my godson be okay?”
I looked at her and with all her questions I could tell she saw the sadness in my eyes. “I need two million dollars for Kai's liver transplant.” she gasped and her mouth flew open. I nodded slightly with the little strength I had.
Stella sat in silence for a while looking at an open space. I guess the news also broke her, she loves Kai so much and they were fond of each other.
“Suzanne, what do you think we should do? How do we track down Tavon and ask him for help?” she asked in a low tone, speaking very close to my ear.
I shook my head in a ‘No’ kind of way. I knew I wouldn't find Tavon. Besides, he didn't care when he was here, why would he care now?
“I think I have an idea.” my body automatically directed itself to face Stella immediately. “What are you thinking about?” I blinked a couple of times in anticipation of her idea.
I sure needed saving!
She picked up her phone and dialled a number. “Hey D,” she said. I wondered who she was talking to but I hope it helped me.
“I'm good. Quick one, about that information you gave me earlier, although it doesn't concern me, I have a damsel in distress that would fit that role perfectly.”
After she said this, my thoughts became more wild, my eyes lingering in the waiting room. Who is she referring to as a damsel in distress?
“Alright D, thank you for doing this for me, I will be waiting for the address, bye…” she concluded and ended the call.
Turning to me who was staring at her and waiting for answers. “And?” I asked while she was looking at me and smiling.
“Okay, so I just found a way to clear Kai's bills but you are going to be taking a huge step.” she paused. My heart raced faster, I had been bombarded with one bad news to another today, what was Stella going to say now?
“You will be getting married to a Billionaire.” my brows furrowed, she sure sounded out of this world, but was she serious?
