Buster Parris signalled for Jock to slow the horses. They slipped into the camp. He meant to see to the needs of the men in his squad before any enterprising officer laid hands on the kit looted from the Yankee cavalry patrol. Buster knew who needed footgear and gave them the Yankee cavalry boots. It was the same with the clothing and blankets they had taken: he made sure that his bedraggled men got the looted uniforms.
Buster kept a carbine and gave the rest to the seven best shots in the squad. He passed the saddles on to his men who needed them. His squad was well mounted. He handed the captured mounts over to the wranglers looking after the horse herd.
Word soon spread about Buster and Jock"s successful ambush of the Yankee Cavalry.
