Memorial Day Special

This is a special from the POV of Skye’s father who is off in vietnam.

PVT WOLFE’S POV

I guess since I have free time, I’ll spend it drafting a letter to send back home.

Dear, Skye

Wet, humid, and rainy—seems like the jungle hasn't had a dry day in what feels like forever. Let me tell you, the jungle sucks. If it’s not Charlie (that's what we call the Vietcong) we’re keeping an eye out for, it's the plethora of venomous animals and plants ready to ruin your day. And don’t get me started on jungle foot; that's another beast entirely. Strangely enough, I find a sense of peace amidst the chaos of gunfights and confusion. I don’t agree with why we’re here. Missing your graduation and you moving downstate is a tough pill to swallow. My SSGT is pretty impressed with my shooting skills; it turns out I might be getting a promotion soon since we need more officers. The jungle at night? That’s the stuff of adrenaline and nightmares. Just the other day, we lost two of our men, picked off in the dark. Because of my knack for mapping and land navigation, they're asking me to team up with the Army LRRP for our penetration missions. I hope everything’s going well for you. I know you must miss the woods and hunting, but once you graduate, you’re free to roam wherever you want. I hope you’re making friends and enjoying your life. Once I’m back, we’ll take Splash out and go hunting together again. You’ve probably nailed a job by now and, fingers crossed, you’re saving up! I bet working on your truck takes up most of your time these days. I get it—you love to tinker. Just remember to keep doing what you love. I’m proud of you!

-Love Dad

I ripped out the piece of paper from my note pad. The next nine months are going to be hell, but maybe when I get back I can have some type of family life. With a sigh I got up, it’s 02:30 yet, it’s time to go and take out the surrounding little villages, don’t let Charlie hide.
