Rain dripped from the torn roof, splashing against the cold floor. Evelyn Shaw slowly opened her eyes, her head spinning, limbs bound as if in chains of iron. Blood seeped from scratches on her arms and legs, mingling with the damp smell of mud.
The warehouse reeked of decay, the air heavy as if soaked with fear itself. Evelyn struggled to lift her head, and saw Serena Lane standing in the corner, a gleaming dagger in her hand. The light fell on her cold face, as if every inch of her skin had been carved with cruelty.
“Why… why are you doing this to me?” Evelyn’s voice trembled, nearly breaking. The person she had once trusted most had become her worst nightmare.
Serena approached slowly, each step pressing down on Evelyn’s chest. Her smile carried no warmth. “You’ve always been naive, Evelyn. Thinking love could save everything, thinking family would stand by you.”
Evelyn felt suffocated, yet a sudden realization struck her—the despair wasn’t the end, but a possible beginning. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a narrow ventilation duct in the corner. Maybe it was her chance to escape.
“Tonight, you are meant to die,” Serena whispered, raising the dagger. Evelyn’s heart pounded like a drum. She took a deep breath, suppressing her trembling—this time, she would not just run.
Summoning all her strength, she twisted her body and lunged toward the vent. The sharp dagger grazed her shoulder, leaving a burning trail of pain.
Serena’s piercing laugh echoed through the warehouse. “You think you can escape? Your whole life has never belonged to you.”
Evelyn squeezed into the vent, darkness enveloping her tightly. Blood and sweat coursed through her veins. She vowed that no matter what, she would survive—and uncover the family’s secrets, making Serena pay for tonight.
The footsteps and laughter faded into the distance, as if the fear lurking in darkness was only the beginning. At the end of the vent lay the unknown—a world that marked the start of Evelyn’s rebirth.
