Chapter 6

Back in the old days, Chloe would have stormed right up to him and demanded answers on the spot. But not anymore. She had seen with her own eyes how Wesley doted on Madeline and her illegitimate child in that villa identical to their marital home. Wesley had changed a long time ago. Even if they had another child together, they could never go back to the way things were. She wanted nothing to do with a man who'd betrayed her in both heart and body! But even if they got divorced, she would never let Madeline and that bastard kid get off scot-free! She had thought through everything over the past few days. She walked over with a frosty expression, didn't even touch the soup, and stared daggers at him. "I built that company from the ground up with my own two hands. I will never agree to you giving those shares to Madeline." Her voice turned colder with every word. "I don't want to drag this out. You cheated first—you're the one in the wrong. When we get divorced, aside from the original assets of the Warren Group, every last bit of the assets we built together, whether it was from before we got married or during our marriage, is mine. All of it." Her stance was rock-solid, and that long-lost sharpness flared back to life in her beautiful eyes. Looking at her, Wesley was struck by a sense of déjà vu, as if he was seeing the old Chloe again, the one who had stood by his side, fighting tooth and nail through fierce corporate battles. But five years had changed far too much. The company wasn't the same, and neither were the people. His face didn't shift an inch. "This isn't the time to talk about this stuff while we're eating. I know you're angry, but Dr. Zimmer said you have to eat three meals on time. Don't let the past few months of hard work go to waste." Chloe was way more blunt and unyielding than he'd expected. "Wesley, just looking at you makes me sick. I can't eat a single bite!" She held his gaze unflinchingly, not an ounce of weakness or compromise in her. The second she'd learned the truth, she'd promised herself she would never debase herself to keep the peace ever again. A faint trace of impatience crossed Wesley's face. "You handed the company over to Madeline in the first place because you wanted her to be able to stand on her own two feet, right? I'm giving her shares so that she can do a better job managing the company for you, that's all." Chloe let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "And what does she do with those shares? Turns right around and boots every talented employee I trained straight out of the company!" Wesley frowned. "You've been gone for five years. No company stays completely stagnant with zero staff changes for that long. Don't fly off the handle and lose all sense of right and wrong like you used to." "I can't tell right from wrong? Or is it Madeline stabbing me in the back while hiding behind you?!" Chloe roared as she shot to her feet, only for a sudden wave of vertigo to hit her so hard the room spun... Wesley lunged forward and caught her just before she hit the floor. "Chloe!" He panicked immediately, barking for the driver to start the car so they could rush her to the hospital, when Chloe drifted in and out of consciousness. The thought of her pregnancy sent a chill through her, and she forced herself to lift a hand and clench it in his shirt. She blinked her eyes open, her face deathly pale, her brows knitted tight as she looked up at him. "I'm not going to the hospital..." "How can you still be throwing a fit at a time like this!" "I'm not throwing a fit..." Chloe's fingers tightened around the front of his shirt. "It's just low blood sugar, an old problem. Don't make a big deal out of it..." Only then did Wesley relax. He lifted her into his arms, carried her back to the bedroom of the villa that was an exact copy of their wedding home, and laid her gently on the large bed. Her earlier spell of dizziness had been triggered by a heady mix of surging anger and standing up too fast. She'd already mostly recovered, but her limbs still felt heavy and weak. Wesley sat down on the edge of the bed. "Did you skip meals again today?" She lifted her eyes, her tone sharp with bitter sarcasm. "What wife would have an appetite after finding out her husband cheated and has a bastard child?" Wesley froze. "You investigated me?" Chloe let out a cold, sharp laugh. "You're bold enough to keep your mistress and your bastard child in our villa, and you're scared of me looking into it? Or do you really think I'm some stupid fool you could string along for the rest of my life?!" "I never planned to keep it from you forever." Wesley's expression twisted into something unreadable. "This is more complicated than you think. I'll explain it all to you later..." "Explain? What is there to explain? That boy calls you Dad, calls Madeline Mom, and he's the spitting image of you—isn't that enough proof? What else could you possibly have to say? That you didn't mean to hide it from me? Or that you didn't deliberately hook up with Madeline right when our twins passed away?!" Her words tumbled out faster and sharper, her rage boiling over. She reared back and slapped Wesley hard across the face— c***k! The impact snapped his head to the side. His face darkened instantly, and he clamped down hard on her wrist, rage swirling viciously in his eyes. "Five years, haven't you acted crazy enough? Colton isn't like our two kids. He's innocent, alright?" Chloe's eyes blazed red. "That boy is 5 years old! He's only 4 months younger than our son and daughter! When you were celebrating his birthdays with him, did you ever spare a single thought for our kids? Did our babies deserve to die?! Have you forgotten they died because of you? It was all your fault..." That last line tore out of her throat in a ragged, guttural scream. It was the raw, gut-wrenching cry of a mother who had lost everything. The k********g five years earlier had targeted Wesley, but their two babies had paid the ultimate price. For five whole years, Chloe had blamed only herself. She'd jolted awake screaming from nightmares night after night, sobbing until her throat was raw, replaying the incident over and over in her head, trying to figure out what she could have done differently to stop the k********g, or how she could have saved their kids once it happened. She'd spiraled into madness, hurt herself on purpose, but she had never once blamed Wesley. She'd caught him crying alone in the study late one night, and she'd been convinced he loved their children every bit as much as she did. She'd been fully convinced no one had hated that tragedy more than he had. It wasn't until she saw Wesley holding that little boy, his face soft with doting tenderness, that it hit her like a bucket of ice water. All this time, she'd just been reading too much into what they had. She'd been fooling herself this whole time. She'd been such a stupid, pathetic fool! Just like every other fight they'd had over the past five years, this one came to an unwilling "end" when Wesley walked away without a word, cold as ice. This time was no different. But this time, she wasn't letting him walk away without saying her piece. Right as he turned to leave, Chloe stared at his back, her eyes red and burning, and spat out every word with icy clarity. "Wesley, I'm divorcing you. I will never forgive you or Madeline!" Wesley paused for barely a second, then kept walking without so much as a glance over his shoulder. After that night, Wesley didn't step foot in the house for three straight days. Chloe couldn't have cared less. She'd already made up her mind to get a divorce, so there was no reason to tell him about the baby growing in her belly. She hid her pregnancy test results away, and quietly laid out plans to move abroad to have the baby once the divorce went through. For the rest of her life, she'd build a brand-new life from scratch, just her and her kid.
