Chapter 4 I Want a Divorce

747 Words
When Elizabeth woke up, there was no one by her hospital bed. She fought through the dizziness and the pain and pressed the call button. After the nurses and doctors rushed in to check on her, Edgar finally showed up at her bedside. He looked at her, guilt in his voice. "Elizabeth, are you hurting?" Elizabeth just stared at him, her face blank. Edgar sighed. His voice came out hoarse. "Earlier, Judith moved suddenly. I was scared she'd hit something. I couldn't get to you. That was wrong of me..." Elizabeth opened her mouth. Her voice came out rough. "Edgar, if you and Judith want to die, fine. But don't take me with you." Edgar frowned. "How can you say that? Judith was just throwing a little fit. That's how she's always been." He opened the container of pumpkin soup he'd brought and lifted a spoon to her mouth. His voice softened a little. "Come on. Don't be like that. She didn't mean it." Elizabeth reached out and slammed the soup onto the floor. Then she started grabbing everything from the bedside table—her phone, a cup of water, and pill bottles. Whatever her hand touched, she hurled at Edgar. She snapped. "Get out. Just get out. I don't want to see you." Edgar stood there in silence, watching her calmly, like he was looking at a madwoman throwing a tantrum for no reason. When Elizabeth finally ran out of energy, Edgar stepped forward and sighed. "Stop making a scene. It's not a big deal." Elizabeth let out a bitter laugh—pure disbelief. 'My poisoning and ICU stay—not a big deal. Getting stabbed so badly I could never get pregnant again—not a big deal. A car crash—also not a big deal. In Edgar's eyes, is Judith the only thing that matters?' She pressed a hand against her chest—it ached with a dull, heavy pain. Then she looked at him and said, one word at a time, "I want a divorce." Edgar's face changed instantly. His voice turned ice cold. "Elizabeth, don't start. I don't want to hear that again." Elizabeth gave a cold laugh. "Since you care so much about Judith, why don't you just marry her? I've had enough of both of you—" Just then, Judith pushed the door open and cut her off. "Elizabeth, why are you losing it again? You know how Edgar and I have been since we were kids. If you can't even handle that, why get married at all?" Elizabeth grabbed the water cup and threw it at her. "Get out, too." Judith let out a sharp scream. Edgar—who'd had a cold look on his face a second ago—suddenly changed. He lunged forward and pulled Judith behind him. His voice was furious. "Elizabeth, what the hell are you doing?" Elizabeth's chest was heaving. The pain was so bad she couldn't even speak for a moment. Then the next second, his hand closed around her throat. Edgar growled low in her ear. "Apologize to Judith." Elizabeth couldn't breathe. She clawed at Edgar's hand, stared at him with pure defiance, and used every bit of strength she had left to slap him across the face. 'Why should I apologize?' She barely had any strength left, so the slap didn't even hurt. Edgar's eyes went dark. He just repeated himself. "Apologize." Elizabeth could feel the strength draining from her limbs. She couldn't believe what was happening. 'Is Edgar really trying to choke me to death?' Judith had almost killed her so many times, and Elizabeth had never once heard an apology. But now, Edgar was forcing her to apologize. She moved her lips. Edgar loosened his grip just a little. Then she said, "Edgar, if you've got the guts, just kill me." Edgar's eyes flickered for a second. Then Judith suddenly snapped. "What the hell is wrong with you two?" She turned and ran out the door. Edgar let go immediately and chased after her. "Judith, the doctor said you need more tests! You can't leave." He ran out after Judith. Elizabeth slumped back onto the bed. She pressed a hand to her throat, gasping for air. Her breathing sounded like a broken bellows. But the pain in her body was nothing compared to the pain in her heart—like a thousand arrows stabbing straight through it. 'How did things between us ever end up like this?'
