The Surprise Party

937 Words
Ethan sat on the edge of his hotel bed, staring blankly at the wall as he contemplated his return to Mexico, a place he had grown to despise over the past few months. He had been working as an engineer his adult life after leaving the hood and the life of drugs and gangs. A job that had initially seemed like a dream come true but had quickly turned into a nightmare. Mrs Smith had made it clear that she expected more from him than just his engineering skills, and the thought of returning to Mexico, where he was treated more like a s*x toy than a human being, filled him with dread and anxiety. Every weekend, he came to Chicago to visit Austin; it was his chance to breathe and remind himself that he would get through this. As he stared at the email that just came into his phone, he felt a mix of emotions that he couldn't quite process. The email was an invitation to a dinner party hosted by Mrs Smith right here in Chicago in honour of the Mexican Minister of Works, Carlos Hernandez. He didn't want to go back to Mexico, but he didn't also want Mrs. Smith to ruin Chicago for him. However, on the bright side, maybe this dinner party could be his chance to escape, his chance to break free from the chains that bound him to Mrs. Smith. Maybe he could find a way to talk to the Minister and gain direct access to his project without having to go through a US administrator like Mrs Smith, who has proven to be Lucifer’s daughter. Ethan's mind was racing with possibilities as he sat there, staring at the email. He thought about the fear that had become his constant companion, the fear of what Mrs Smith would do to him if he didn't comply with her demands. But he also thought about the hope that had been rekindled within him, the hope that he might finally be able to break free. He knew he had to make a decision, and fast. The dinner party was just a few days away, and he needed to RSVP ASAP. Ethan took a deep breath, weighing his options carefully. He could decline the invitation and try to find a way to escape Mrs. Smith's contract on his own. Or he could attend the dinner party and take a chance on meeting the Minister and finding a way out. As he sat there, torn between hope and fear, Ethan knew he had to take a chance. He would attend the dinner party and see where it would lead him. Patricia’s living room was abuzz with the sound of laughter and chatter as her guests mingled and celebrated her birthday. The room was elegantly decorated, with a stunning "Happy Birthday" banner hanging from the wall. Patricia and her friend Emily stepped out onto the balcony, where they could enjoy the cool evening air and take in the breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline. As they leaned against the railing, Patricia turned to Emily with a mischievous grin. "I'm still amazed that you were able to pull off this surprise party without Mrs. Robinson spilling the beans," she said, raising an eyebrow. Emily chuckled. "Well, we all know that Mrs. Robinson can't keep a secret to save her life. So, I told the party planner not to breathe a word to her until the day before the party. That way, by the time she found out, it would be too late to ruin the surprise." The two women laughed and clinked their glasses together in a toast. As they gazed out at the partygoers, their eyes landed on Ethan, who was standing off to the side, sipping a glass of champagne and staring up at the stars. Patricia’s eyes sparkled with amusement. "I'm impressed that you were able to convince him to come tonight after what has been going on in Mexico," she said, raising an eyebrow. Emily smiled slyly. "Well, when men are desperate, they're easy to manipulate. And Ethan is definitely desperate. He's been trying to get out of this contract, and all I had to do was make him see a way out. I had your assistant send him a message that you were going to be hosting the Mexican minister of works in your home here in Chicago” Patricia laughed, a throaty sound. "I'll say we have got him wrapped around our little finger, and he knows it. But I have to admit, I'm a little surprised that he showed up tonight. I thought for sure he'd be too proud to come here at all." Emily shrugged. "Pride doesn't pay the bills, Pat. And Ethan needs money to keep his business afloat. So, he's willing to swallow his pride and do whatever it takes to keep the money, whether to remain in the contract or find a way out of it. The bottom line is that he needs the money”. As they talked, Patricia’s eyes never left Ethan. She could see the tension in his shoulders, the way he was gripping his glass of champagne like it was a lifeline. She knew he was trapped, caught in a web, and she felt empowered to know she was spinning that web. But at the same time, she couldn't deny the spark of attraction she felt whenever she looked at him. He was a beautiful man with piercing blue eyes and chiselled features. And despite the fact that he was clearly troubled, Patricia couldn't help but feel drawn to him.
