Faceless

Fred's POV The new week started pretty well, as the thought of us relocating to a new house close to town made me happy. My beaming thought was replaced by a frown when I remembered Mr. Francis would be having us that morning. I wondered how the school management would choose to start a new week with a subject as intense as physics, and it was always a tedious two hours of my life every Monday. Mr. Francis was always fond of cracking dried jokes instead of going straight to the point and saving us the stress of dealing with pretentious laughter across the hall from students. We often had to laugh just to make him happy and ready to teach, while we couldn't wait for the bell to go off, indicating the end of his two hours of boring lectures. You could see the joy beaming in students' faces as he wrapped up his lecture and set to leave the class. I turned around to look for John, who had changed his seat after the letter incident. He was my seat buddy since lower grade. He was having a conversation with Phila. I only wanted to regain his friendship, as I had missed our duo. "What's up, dude?" I greeted them with a smile and sat close to him. John felt uncomfortable as he gave me a cold smile and then turned his focus back on Phila, who also gave me a cold look. "We can't be acting childish forever, bro. You and I know I had no hand in that letter. If anyone else believed, not you, John," I said bitterly. "That doesn't change anything. I am stigmatized and labeled gay. Everyone, including my mum, thinks I'm gay because of our closeness. Please, kindly let me be. I don't want to be caught in this web of mis-identity again." John fired back as they stood up and walked away. I was devastated and shocked. John was caught stealing in our lower grade, and even though everyone shamed him, I stood by him and believed it was a mistake, and here he was, making me feel bad for a crime he knew so well I didn't commit. "Who wrote that letter? Who framed me?" I questioned as I tried too hard to hold back my tears as I walked out of the class. I felt my heart panting fast when I saw Rhoda, my girlfriend. She was seventeen, beautifully structured with her dark brown almond-shaped eyes; she had an aura that announced her presence to both genders anytime she passed. Rhoda and I have been in a relationship since our ninth or tenth grade; I can't be too sure now. It all started as a mere Joke that later metamorphosed into a beautiful ship that I thought would stay forever since we were each other first relationship and s*x. We loved each other and had won prom couples for four consecutive times. We were inseparable until this gay saga. "Rhoda, please slow down. Let's talk, please," I pleaded as she increased her pace immediately when she saw me approaching her. "I'm giving you sixty seconds, Fred. What do you want from me?" Rhoda asked, trying to hold back her tears and sniffing her nose. I felt so pity for her. She was an innocent girl, the best student in her grade, and hated being in public dramas. "Fred, you aren't saying anything. I have a lot to do, and I don't have time," She said, trying to avoid my eyes. "Rhoda. I'm not gay. I don't know who drafted such a letter to tarnish my image, but everything isn't true. You know it's not true; you should be defending and supporting me in times like this. Yes! It would help if you stood by my side now because I need you more, but you decided to join the rest of them in pointing accusing fingers at me," I said as I felt my emotions raging and tears freely roll down my cheek. "Fred, I did warn you that I'm not a public person. I prefer to study, pass my exams, and attend College without any public drama or attention. I don't believe it is my fault that you didn't heed my warning or advice, and now, the stigma is not just yours alone. Everyone keeps pointing fingers at me. I can't go to the library anymore; I came to school last week to see a drawing of d**k and p***y on my desk with the inscription what your boyfriend loves," Rhoda said with a shaky tone. I got close to comfort her, but she stepped back quickly. "Don't touch me," she snapped and walked away. I felt broken as I watched her walk away. I wondered what I would do to the bastards behind this letter when they got caught. I was more determined to get the culprit now than ever since they had caused me my beautiful relationship with John and my beloved Rhoda. I sat on the school balcony and buried my face in my hands, lost in thought. I remembered one of my mom's favorite quotes: "Evil doesn't last forever; the Truth must prevail." I wondered how long it would take for the truth to prevail in my case when I felt someone holding my eyes. I silently prayed it should be Rhoda. I quickly raised my head and saw Miriam holding a handkerchief for me. "It's okay, Fred," She assured me as I took the handkerchief. "Thank you," "Sorry to bother you; I have been looking for you. You weren't in your class," Miriam said while I kept mute. She sat close to me and patted my back. "It's all going to be fine," she whispered. I raised my head and gave her a passionate hug. I wasn't bothered about the onlookers who couldn't mind their business. We released ourselves from each other grasp and stared at each other, not minding the amused look in the eyes of the students around us. Miriam couldn't hide her joy as she beamed. "Fred!" She called softly, and I stared at her blankly. "Thank you so much for always being here, Miriam, " I said and wiped my face. "what are friends for?" she questioned with her beautiful eyes staring at mine. "Can we take a stroll?" I asked, feeling uncomfortable at the on-looker's unbreakable gaze. I was tired of being a topic for discussion, even though Miriam didn't mind. "Your birthday is by the weekend, right? What's the plan?" I asked, trying to clear the tense atmosphere. "You remembered?" She asked in excitement, and I nodded. I can never forget Miriam's birthday because it was the same date as my anniversary with Rhoda. "I don't have a plan yet. You know I have never organized a party for my birthday," she replied with a smile. "Then let's throw a party," I said, and Miriam gave me a puzzled look. "Fine. I will host a party for you with free drinks and a venue. You know I'm Don Santos Junior." I winked at her, and she smiled. "I have a condition, though," I said and pouted my lips. "What's it, please?" Miriam asked with a smile. "I will organize a free party for you; you can bring all your friends and mates. I will do likewise; all I asked is you persuade Rhoda to come." I said, and Miriam's countenance changed into a disapproving look. She sighed and cleared her throat, "Fine, it's a deal." She frowned and waved me goodbye. I felt relieved at the thought of spending time with Rhoda at Miriam's party, and I knew John would be there for sure. He wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to be with his crush.
