Susan's POV I had a satisfactory smile on my face as I thought about how the evening with the Santos had been. From the sumptuous meal to Sophia's chit-chat and unending questions. Then Fred's arrival. He acted so cold toward me and didn't give me the kind of welcome I had anticipated. I felt embarrassed at the cold response I got from him when I tried initiating a conversation between us and the disapproved look on his face while he sat down. "Sonia told me you love volleyball," I said with a smile while he frowned. "You came here to visit my dad, not me, I will advise you to concentrate on why you are here," Fred answered bluntly as everyone turned to him in disbelief. "Why would you respond in that way?" His dad fired back in anger. "I'm sorry," He said unapologetically when he saw the shock written over his mom's face. I wondered why he had acted that way towards me. "Was he suspicious of my relationship with his dad? What if he had seen us making out that day? I don't even know if we had s*x that night". Fred's response showed he didn't like me and the thought made me feel sad because of how attracted I was to him not considering our age. A lot of thought ran through my head as I tried to figure out why Fred was that rude towards me. "I'll take the gift to Maggie," Larry said interrupting my thought as he stepped out of the car as soon as we entered the parking lot. I was lost in my thoughts and didn't notice we were home already. Don Santos's wife had given me a hamper gift as a souvenir. "Welcome Miss Susan. You have a call from a private number, " Maggie said blocking the phone's speaker with her hand to prevent the caller from the other end from hearing her. "Who might be the caller?" I questioned myself as I walked towards her to get the phone. "hold on she's here now," Maggie said and handed the phone to me. "Hello, " I greeted. "Good evening my dear Susan," A familiar masculine voice greeted and I frowned as I recognized who he was. It was Chris. "I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. I've been worried sick about you. You don't take my calls or reply to my messages. It's been hard trying to survive these past weeks," He said in a tone that irritated me as I grunted. "How did you get this number, Chris?" I said frustratedly. I wondered how he had managed to get my home line. "Is that necessary? Susan, I can't get my mind off you since we last made out. You've been on my every thought. I just want to be part of your life. what do I have to do to win your heart? " He asked helplessly like a child while I rolled my eyes in frustration. Chris has a way with words and has never ceased to amaze me but the last thing I wanted was another love drama with anyone. I listened as he went on and on professing his love for me. At some point, I felt his words melting my heart as I thought about giving him a chance but was too afraid of being committed to him. Chris was one with a good nature and well-to-do as he was a freelance writer and also had other lucrative side hustles that made him wealthy enough to live a comfortable life. He was an independent man in all areas and had a good sense of humor. He knew how to treat his woman rightly and also would go over heels to see her happy. I have felt genuine love the few times I have given him a chance. "Susan, are you there?" He asked and I sighed. "Chris, how did you get my home line? I asked again with a furious tone. "Never mind. I know how you got it," I frowned. Sarah was Chris's business partner and she had tried to ship us severally even though I have always warned her about it. "You know my take about us already and it's not ever going to change. We can't work Chris. You are a good guy but not for me, " I blurted out and Chris took a deep breath. "Susan.... " "I'm in love with someone else," I affirmed interrupting his words since I knew he was about to rant about how he felt toward me again. "He must be lucky to have you, Susan," He said calmly making me feel guilty as I rolled my eyes. "How about we talk another time, I just got home from a business dinner and I am so exhausted, " I said. I was bored already listening to him. "Okay. How about I stop by your office tomorrow for a little chit-chat," he said and I grunted. "I promise no drama, please. " He said like he could read my thoughts. He had almost created an embarrassing scene the last time he stopped by my office with a bouquet, box of chocolates, and saxophonist to serenade me without prior notice. it was not my birthday nor was I celebrating a special event. I couldn't hide my displeasure as I watched him pull a crowd at my office premises. I had managed to smile until he was through with whatever he claimed he was doing. He could see how furious I looked as we walked into my office alone and I warned him to stop being too pushy. Chris claimed he had invited the saxophonist and got the bouquet and chocolates to appreciate me for how good I made him feel the previous night after we made out in my office. I felt so embarrassed as I watched him smile at me while talking and I cursed myself for being too loose that day. Afterward, I warned my secretary never to let him in without my permission, and if I was busy she could create an excuse just to get rid of him. "Fine, you can come tomorrow" I replied and hung up. I felt a bit of relief as I took off my heels and laid on my bed. The thought of how upset Fred was when he saw me with his family made my heart heavy as I tried to catch some sleep. It was an eventful day and I needed my beauty sleep to clear my mind of the negative energy I had felt that day and Chris was one of them.
