Chapter Twenty-Five Lee was given the place of honor for her ride downtown: The backseat of the second cruiser. She admired the steel mesh security screen, the torn upholstery and took note of the missing door handles. She watched traffic out the side window, listened to the crackle of the police radio and tried to analyze some of the stains on the seat cushions. It was almost dark by the time they reached the station. The cruiser pulled up to the main doors and Lee was relieved to see Curtis, her attorney, standing behind the glass. He was slouching comfortably against the wall and chatting to an impressionable young woman in uniform.
