“Seemed clean when I met him,” she said.
He turned shrewd eyes on Terrence. “So what, did Bobby tell him that he'd hunt him to the ends of the earth if he ever did anything to hurt Nella?” he asked.
“Nope,” said Terrence, who bit into a frosted cake with great relish. “Liz did that.”
Jonah tore open the Zebra Cake and smiled. “Love that woman,” he said.
“Where's Vera, by the way?” asked Reena. “Why didn't she come with you for the weekend?”
“She's pulling two doubles this weekend at that food hole where she works,” said Jonah. “But wait until you hear this…”
He filled the two of them in on seeing Jessica after he and Vera had had dinner. When he was done, they looked at him in silence.
“I know,” he said in response to their expressions. “I know.”
