The PushJonah heard his friends' reactions behind his back. Terrence swore; no surprise there. Liz backed into something, murmuring, “Oh, my God.” Douglas let out something between a choke and a gasp. He didn't know what Reena was thinking, Spader either. But he did wonder about Vera. She, like him, had seen Jessica's transformation before, and he knew it terrified her. He couldn't imagine what seeing it again would do to her from a mental standpoint.
“Jessica,” he said slowly, “your beef is with me. Not my friends. Let them walk.”
“I refuse,” said Reena before Jessica could respond, and stood next to him while elongating her javelin to a yellow-gleaming slender weapon.
“I'm with you come hell or high water, Jonah,” said Terrence, who stood at his other side.
