Chapter 14

1655 Words
Aria’s breath caught in her throat. The world seemed to tilt around her, the sounds of the camp fading into the background as her father’s words echoed in her mind. Betrothal to Daniel. It was like a nightmare come to life, and for a moment, she couldn’t find the words to respond. Jerome mistook her silence for reluctance. “I know this is sudden, Aria, and I know you may have had other dreams. But this is what’s best for the pack, for all of us. Daniel is a good man. He’s strong, loyal, and he cares for you. This alliance will strengthen Crescent Park and secure our future.” Aria felt like she was drowning, the weight of her father’s expectations pressing down on her, crushing her. She wanted to scream, to shout that she couldn’t marry Daniel, that she had found her true mate, that she loved Steve. But she knew she couldn’t say any of that, not without destroying everything. “Father, I… I don’t know what to say,” she finally managed, her voice barely above a whisper. Jerome’s expression softened further, and he reached out to place a hand on her shoulder. “You don’t have to say anything, Aria. I know this is difficult, but in time, you’ll see that this is the right decision. You’ll come to care for Daniel, just as he cares for you.” Aria nodded numbly, though every fiber of her being was screaming in protest. She couldn’t marry Daniel. She couldn’t go through with this. But she also couldn’t defy her father, not without revealing the truth and bringing chaos to both their packs. “I’ll give you some time to prepare yourself,” Jerome said, his tone gentler now. “We’ll make the announcement tonight, after the main events. I want you to be ready, Aria. This is an important night for all of us.” With that, Jerome squeezed her shoulder one last time before turning and walking away, leaving Aria standing there, her mind reeling. The ground seemed to sway beneath her feet, and she had to steady herself against a nearby tree to keep from collapsing. This was it. This was the moment she had been dreading, the moment when her father’s plans for her future would collide with the secret she had been hiding. And she had no idea how she was going to get through it. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she blinked them back, forcing herself to stay strong. She couldn’t afford to break down now. She had to find a way out of this, a way to protect both her heart and her pack. But the options were few, and the time was running out. As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the camp, Aria knew that the coming night would change everything. She was caught between two worlds, two destinies, and the choice she made would determine not just her own future, but the future of everyone she loved. And as the first notes of the festival music began to drift through the air, a chill ran down her spine. The weight of the secrets she carried was growing heavier by the minute, and she could feel the fragile threads of her life beginning to unravel. But no matter what happened, she knew one thing for certain: after tonight, nothing would ever be the same again. The Festival of Blood was meant to be a time of celebration, a chance for the werewolf packs to come together under the moonlit sky to reaffirm their bonds and traditions. But as the night wore on, it became clear that this year’s festival was different. The air was thick with unease, the usual camaraderie between the packs tainted by an undercurrent of suspicion and fear. Steve Davidson, Alpha of Blood Moon Park, stood on the outskirts of the gathering, his sharp eyes scanning the crowd. His pack members mingled with those from Crescent Park and other smaller packs, but Steve noticed the subtle shifts in their demeanor—the way conversations abruptly stopped when he approached, the furtive glances exchanged between wolves who normally would have been more open. It was as if the very atmosphere was charged, crackling with the potential for conflict. The past few days had been a whirlwind for Steve, ever since that fateful encounter with Aria. Finding his fated mate in the daughter of his enemy had been a shock unlike any he had ever experienced. Since then, every moment with Aria had been both a blessing and a curse. The bond between them was undeniable, an intense connection that both exhilarated and terrified him. But their bond also threatened to unravel everything he had worked for. Steve’s thoughts were interrupted as his Beta, Marcus, approached. Marcus was a loyal second-in-command, a seasoned warrior with a keen sense for trouble. His face was set in a grim expression, his eyes reflecting the same unease that Steve felt. “Alpha,” Marcus greeted, his voice low and cautious. “We have a problem.” Steve’s jaw tightened. “What is it?” Marcus glanced around, making sure no one was within earshot. “There are rumors spreading among the packs. Some are saying that there’s something unusual about the Crescent Park Alpha’s daughter. They’re whispering about an unholy bond, a connection that defies the natural order.” Steve’s heart skipped a beat. He had known that the bond between him and Aria was dangerous, but he hadn’t expected the rumors to spread so quickly. If the other packs were already talking, it wouldn’t be long before the situation spiraled out of control. “What exactly are they saying?” Steve asked, his voice carefully controlled. Marcus hesitated, choosing his words with care. “They’re saying that Aria Perkins has been seen sneaking away from the festival grounds, that she’s been meeting with someone in secret. Some are even suggesting that she’s consorting with an enemy of Crescent Park.” Steve’s pulse quickened. This was worse than he had feared. If the rumors continued to spread, it wouldn’t be long before someone put the pieces together and realized the truth. The delicate balance between Crescent Park and Blood Moon Park could be shattered in an instant. “Who’s spreading these rumors?” Steve demanded. Marcus shook his head. “It’s hard to say. You know how these things go—once a rumor starts, it takes on a life of its own. But it’s clear that someone is trying to sow discord, to pit the packs against each other.” Steve’s mind raced as he considered his options. He had to find a way to contain the situation, to quash the rumors before they could do any more damage. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that the only way to truly put an end to the whispers was to confront the source of the tension: his relationship with Aria. “Have you heard anything else?” Steve asked, his voice tight. Marcus hesitated again, his gaze dropping to the ground for a moment before he met Steve’s eyes. “There’s talk of a possible alliance between Crescent Park and another pack, one that could tip the balance of power.” Steve’s blood ran cold. “What kind of alliance?” “An arranged marriage,” Marcus said quietly. “Between Aria Perkins and Daniel, the son of Crescent Park’s Beta.” Steve’s fists clenched at his sides. The idea of Aria being forced into an alliance with someone else, especially someone from Crescent Park, made his wolf snarl in anger. But he couldn’t let his emotions get the best of him—not now, not when the situation was so precarious. “I need to speak with Jerome Perkins,” Steve said, his voice hard. “If he’s planning to marry off Aria, he needs to know what’s at stake.” Marcus nodded, though there was a flicker of doubt in his eyes. “Are you sure that’s wise, Alpha? Confronting Jerome could escalate the situation.” Steve’s gaze was steely. “I don’t have a choice. If these rumors continue to spread, we’re looking at a full-blown war. I have to try to reason with him, to make him see that an alliance with Blood Moon Park is the only way to ensure peace.” Marcus didn’t argue, but his silence spoke volumes. Steve knew that his Beta was right to be concerned. Jerome Perkins was not a man easily swayed by reason, especially when it came to his daughter. But Steve had to try. The alternative was unthinkable. As Steve turned to leave, Marcus placed a hand on his arm, stopping him. “Be careful, Steve. Jerome is a proud man, and he won’t take kindly to anyone interfering with his plans. Whatever happens, remember that your pack comes first.” Steve nodded, though the words felt hollow in his ears. His pack did come first, but Aria was his mate, the one person who mattered more to him than anything else in the world. And he couldn’t stand by and let her be used as a pawn in a game of power and politics. With a final nod to Marcus, Steve set off in search of Jerome. He had to find the Crescent Park Alpha before the night was over, before the festival reached its c****x and the rumors turned into something far more dangerous. As he moved through the crowd, his thoughts kept returning to Aria. The bond between them was still new, still fragile, but it was stronger than anything he had ever felt before. And he knew, deep in his soul, that he would do whatever it took to protect her, even if it meant going against the wishes of her father and his own pack.
