Chapter 3 Tim sat with his mother, going over what still needed to be done for the evening. They couldn’t have asked for a lovelier Saturday afternoon. So much of what his mother was feeling was obvious to him. Her face was an open book. Or maybe they just knew each other so well that they could read each other. “Penny for your thoughts?” he asked and gave her the opening. “My thoughts are worth far more than a penny,” she said. “Damn right.” “Do you think I’m being silly, at my age thinking about settling down?” “I knew you were going to go there,” Tim said. “It’s only a first date, Mom.” “There’s no such thing as ‘just a first date’ for people my age.
