Nicholas still wore the suit he had worn last time, but it wrinkled more. He looked pretty haggard, as if he hadn't slept for days.
When Vivian's gaze fell on his face, he captured it. His intense eyes were bloodshot, and Vivian didn't feel the pressure from this proud man as usual. The sorrow and frustration on his face softened his aggressiveness and arrogance.
He has changed tremendously, looking pitiful.
The next second, Vivian cast down her eyes and couldn't believe what was in her mind just now. Nicholas wanted to end her life. Probably he was late because of the preparations. Vivian reminded her not to think about the nonsense any longer. As if nothing had happened, she shifted her gaze. Nicholas also withdrew his after meeting hers in mid-air for a second.
He strode towards Steven Moore, the second son of the Moore Family, who was holding William's portrait.
"Let me do it," he whispered simply, full of determination and strength.
His appearance and behavior firmly established a foundation for him to take over as the next master of the Moore family. All the attendees' gazes were fixed on him. Either in compliment or respect, they looked at the new family master up and down. So did Steven, whose eyes were filled with hidden complaints. However, he obediently passed the portrait to Nicholas.
"Is your work that important? You stayed at the company after Father passed away. Do you care about him?" he mumbled.
Steven was a gentle and decent college lecturer. He would devote himself to research and teaching, so he didn't care about the Moore Group's businesses.
Nicholas didn't get pissed as he knew Steven had no idea about the company's operations. After darting at Charles, Nicholas replied, "Well, whether my work is important, and what terrible things would happen if I hadn't worked on it on time, I'm sure Uncle Charles knows it clearly."
Charles had done something to trap Nicholas, which was another arrangement besides his plan with Vivian. He had intended to stop Nicholas from coming over so that he could use this excuse to blame Nicholas and ruin his reputation. Much to his surprise, Nicholas could quickly resolve the problems, and come over.
Charles didn't want to take the pressure, so he coughed and brought up the topic, "Vivi, didn't you tell me you wanted to talk to Nicholas in front of my father?"
All the attention was now focused on Vivian. Everyone there knew who she was, and so did they know how much Nicholas hated her. Rumors had it that she also had something to do with William's death. Whether the rumors were true, the Moores never officially refuted them. However, she wanted to speak to Nicholas at that moment. The attendees believed there must be something behind it.
All the people gazed at Vivian.
Nicholas also stared at her. "What do you want to say?"
They had known each other for 19 years. Nicholas disdained Vivian and always ignored her. He had never treated her so peacefully.
Vivian's dried lips parted while she looked up at Nicholas. Clenching her hands together to pluck up her courage, she asked, "You always thought Mr. Moore's illness and death had something to do with me in the past month. You hate me, so you want to punish me after his funeral, don't you?"
Nicholas didn't see a panic or entreating look in her eyes, nor did he see humbleness or fear. They were only filled with despair and frustration, as if she had accepted her fate to die.
Nicholas suddenly recalled the scene where she stood in front of his car like a fool yesterday.
His eyes darkened. "Yes." He nodded in response.
Vivian's eyebrows frowned quickly. "Mr. Moore always wanted you to marry me. He left me 5% of the company shares to push you, but you hated me, so you didn't want to give it to me or marry me, right?"
"Correct," Nicholas nodded again.
The shares William left to her could cost a lot of money. Since he had known Charles had evil intentions, he would never let the company shares fall into another person's hands.
In the past few years, he had made a lot of private money from the profits of his startup company, Nove Co. He'd instead exchange the shares of Nove Co for cash or own the debt rather than leaving the shares all in Vivian's hands. After all, she didn't know how to operate a company and was with a scheming and cold man, Charles.
"All right. I see." Vivian raised her head to hold back her tears. When she lowered it, the corner of her mouth lifted, and her eyes reddened.
"I've done my word. All right. You can continue now. Don't worry. Things that bother you won't happen."
Charles became anxious. "Vivi, you haven't finished your words yet, have you?"
"I have," Vivian widened her eyes. "Nicholas hates me and doesn't want to marry me or give me the legacy. Everything is clear. I'm done talking to him."
After all, she was appointed by William to be the future hostess of the family. Vivian looked pretty and graceful. All her delicate features made her look elegant. She would also emanate an excellent temperament after putting on makeup. Right then, she pretended to be innocent, and it worked well. Otherwise, the unmarried girls in town wouldn't have imitated her while cursing her for seducing Nicholas.
She stared at Charles innocently, and others watched the scene curiously. They began to discuss.
"Right, Charles. Vivian Chapman should be swept out soon. Nicholas would have mercy on her to let her survive. How could she dream of having properties that are not supposed to belong to her?"
"Whether she has finished her words, it has nothing to do with you, doesn't it? Joyce dislikes her a lot. Do you want to show her your kindness?"
"You looked so anxious. Do you want to take over the 5% shares instead of letting Nicholas take it?"
They exposed Charles' intention bluntly. Nicholas scowled at Charles.
Before the battle began, Charles' purposes had been utterly exposed. He was more irritated. "Vivian Chapman, why are you pretending? You were not like this when begging me for help yesterday."
Vivian didn't fear him at all. Raising her chin, she retorted, "Pretending? Nicholas doesn't like me. Doesn't everyone know it? I know it was my fault, and no one could help me. I can't expect anything. The shares? Are you willing to help me obtain them? Nicholas is the new master of the family. If he refuses, how could you get it for me? Do you have spies around him, or can you impact his decisions?"
She didn't state anything but told everything, nailing it with one shot. Her words caused a mighty uproar among the attendees. All discussed.
Nicholas looked sterner when hearing those discussions, gazing at Vivian intensely. From time to time, his gaze swept over Charles. With a sullen look, he looked aloof and ruthless. A storm gathered in his ink-black eyes.
The pressure that emanated from him was like an invisible shade enveloping everyone. With a sense of guilt, Charles felt stressed and panicked. He burst into anger.
