As her voice faded, she was interrupted by a loud WHACK! In his rage, he had slapped her. The power of the slap twisted her face to the side. She caressed her burning-hot cheeks in a trance as she heard him ask her angrily,
"Why do you have to humiliate yourself like this?! Is it possible for you to become a surrogate?!"
She was still quite young, in her prime, but she went on to become a surrogate! Did she realize it would ruin her life?!
Was he truly useless as a father, in her opinion, to the point of being unable to safeguard his daughter?
"I will not touch a single penny of this money!" I, Henry Kinslee, do not need to go to such extremes!"
When he finished speaking, he stood up and stormed out of the room.
Brielle bowed her head, confused, and grasped the hem of her clothes tightly...
Six months later
Brielle was joined by the secretary as she processed her paperwork in preparation for starting her studies at her institution. On the way there, she felt a terrible pain in her stomach that didn't go away.
Brielle had been on pins and needles for the past few months when she unexpectedly went into premature birth. They would not be able to be at the Ashford family's luxury hospital on time, so the secretary rushed her to a gynecology hospital in town and calmly went through the appropriate procedures.
Brielle lay in bed, her face pale as death. When she looked up, an incandescent lamp's light flashed in front of her eyes. She came out in a cold sweat while in excruciating discomfort. She was finally going to be discharged after eight months of pregnancy. The secretary accompanied her to the delivery room, continually encouraging her.
"Don't worry, Miss Kinslee! You and the kids will be alright; I'll wait for the good news outside!"
"Thank you..."
Brielle pressed her eyes tight as she was forced into the delivery room, with the doors closing behind her.
Henry was familiar with the hospital's director. The doctor promptly contacted Brielle after learning that she was about to give birth. After receiving the message, Henry raced to the hospital and waited impatiently outside the delivery room.
A resonant wail could be heard in the chamber four hours later.
"It's a healthy baby boy!" says the mother.
The nurse placed the infant in an incubator and took him to the newborn nursery room. Henry was unconcerned about the infant. He moved about and looked around nervously outside the delivery room.
The secretary made her way to the nursery room. She turned to ask, inspecting the infant from the other side of the glass window,
"What about the other one?"
"We are terribly sorry!" said the nurse sheepishly. The younger one is too weak because of the preterm delivery. He wasn't breathing when he came out..."
"Is there no hope?" the secretary asked, her face tight with horror.
"... Yes," the nurse stated flatly.
She was disappointed, but there was nothing she could do about it.
"Fine. Please handle that child appropriately."
When she finished speaking with the nurse, she held up her phone to call some of her contacts and request an ambulance to transport the newborn to the Ashford family's private hospital.
Before she went, she wrote a cheque and handed it to Henry Kinslee. She addressed him cordially, "Mr. Kinslee." Your daughter has been suffering for several months. This is the final payment. Please take it!"
Henry accepted the cheque from her dazed. The secretary then quickly left.
Brielle had run out of energy inside the delivery room and passed out.
The nurse approached her and was about to deal with the stillborn baby. However, as she was supporting him, she observed something odd. Her pupils shook, and her face transformed dramatically. She hurriedly carried the infant to the doctor.
"Doctor!"
…
Six years later.
The passage of time. Years and months passed in an instant.
Brielle, who was carrying a cart through a crowded department shop, anxiously peered around back and forth. Her steps were quick.
She simply went to the daily necessities department to get something. However, when she turned around, he had vanished and was nowhere to be found.
She slowed her stride as she passed the toy department and studied the entire area. She was startled to see a small figure. Brielle shrugged and sighed helplessly. She chuckled to herself as the corners of her mouth twisted up. She then steered the wagon in that way and knelt behind the figure.
A young child stood in front of a rack, his gaze fixed on a neatly wrapped remote-controlled racing car. He appeared to be about five or six years old. He was dressed in a tidy school uniform that was a bit too big for his slim physique.
He had smooth, silky, jet-black hair, jade-like complexion, and a youthful face with exquisite features and rosy cheeks.
He had wide, sparkling eyes that twinkled at times, clear and attractive. His dark eyes were bordered by thick, curled lashes that were slightly raised, like two black phoenix wings. His black orbs were clear and impurity-free.
This adorable and lovely young guy resembled a little fairy. However, the small fairy had a serious expression on his face right now, as if he were an adult.
"$150... that's too much..." The youthful voice had a solemn tone that was out of character for his age. The way he furrowed his brows as he began counting with his fingers reminded me of an old man. He then moaned in agony, his shoulders drooping as if he were in a world of darkness.
Brielle laughed helplessly at his depressed demeanor, but her heart felt a little bitter. She pursed her lips and reached out to tap him on the shoulder. The horrified small child whirled around. When he realized it was her, his face went a peculiar shade of red.
"Mommy…."
"Mommy looked everywhere for you! Didn't Mama tell you to follow me and not run around?"
Brielle acted to be angry, and the small kid definitely felt more guilty as a result. His little hand tenderly grasped her neck. He blinked his wide eyes continuously, his lashes slightly sagging, while he murmured,
"Don't be upset, Mommy... Aaron will no longer run around!"
"Our dear, Aaron!" She got down on her knees and hugged him.
"What exactly are you looking at?"
Aaron reflexively pointed to the speeding car, but suddenly retreated his little fingers, as if he had thought of something. He then raised his face and seemed to be uninterested.
"Mommy, Aaron is just looking, and he doesn't really want it!"
He may have said it, but his gaze was fixed on the neatly packed remote-controlled racing car. They've thoroughly exposed him.
Her face became expressionless. Despite his youth, he had learned to talk against his will. She knew he wanted it, but he was attempting to help her save up for it. This was why he put on a rough exterior!
From birth, this child was an incredible delight!
She chuckled and patted his small head. She rose up and approached the cashier, indicating the racing automobile. Aaron fixed his gaze on the toy before returning his gaze to Brielle. His eyes brightened up and shone with delight as if he had predicted what was about to happen. He dashed up to the counter and gazed longingly at the neatly packaged toy now in the hands of the cashier.
The cashier leaned on the counter to scan the racing car's barcode. The young boy placed his hand on the counter and anxiously hovered over the edge of it on tiptoe, his small face happy.
Brielle trailed following him. She was visibly moved by his bright smile. If she couldn't even give her child's smallest wish, she didn't deserve to be called a decent mother.
She had owed this young man much too much over the years.
She gave birth to twins to that man six years ago. They were both pretty feeble when they were born because they were preterm babies. Aaron's position was far more dire. Aaron's brother had consumed too many nutrients while still in the womb, and as a result, Aaron was not breathing when he was delivered. Her father told her that as soon as the older one was released, he was taken to the newborn nursery unit and then transferred to another hospital. Simultaneously, the nurse who had delivered the babies made an unexpected discovery. Aaron, who was declared dead when he was born, had a faint breath!
The newborn was eventually saved from death after a series of emergency medical interventions. However, his physical constitution was simply too weak, and he was usually sick. Her poor child has been fatherless since birth. Making amends, she lavished attention on him. She poured her heart out for him. This was done to show him that even without a father, the quantity of love he received could only increase!
As a result, she named him 'Aaron Kinslee'. While she thanked the heavens for blessing her with him, she wished for his health.
In the case of Benjamin, her father assisted her in keeping the truth from him. Her father had an excellent rapport with the hospital's director, and the guy went against his professional ethics by assisting them in falsifying medical records. As a result, Benjamin was ignorant that the second baby had survived, and Aaron was able to remain with her rather than being taken away from her as well. If the man discovered Aaron's existence, he would undoubtedly take him away from her; she couldn't imagine how desperate she would be in that situation!
She returned to university after giving birth to pursue her education. Her father's company eventually failed, and he later filed for bankruptcy with the court. That man kept his promise; once she gave birth to a boy for him, he paid her more than the agreed-upon payment. He was quite generous.
This also alleviated many of her difficulties, and the large sum of money helped to pay off her father's debts.
After the company went bankrupt, Henry had to start over. Nonetheless, he was getting on in years, and having been through the lowest moment of his life, he was too attached to everything around him. He had long since lost the will to fight. He didn't want to labor too hard and face adversity again.
Maya, her adoptive mother, took away the glitz and regretted marrying the useless old jerk, Henry. She was a housewife at first, but owing to life's restraints, she had to go out and perform odd jobs. However, as a result of her prior life of luxury, she developed a habit of nitpicking and was frequently fired from her positions. Maya was reprimanded at work and directed her rage onto Brielle and her son Aaron.
Aurora, her adoptive younger sister, had a mediocre academic record. Because her high school grades did not qualify her for university, she was forced to enlist in a trade school. Her domineering attitude, on the other hand, frequently got her into difficulty; a gang of shady thugs would show up at their homes on a daily basis.
She lazed around even more after graduation. She had a lot of ambition but no actual talent to back it up. She sat at home, unable to find work, and occasionally hung out with those useless gangsters. Aurora's entire family was currently dependent on her father's meager salary, but she frequently misbehaved, frequenting nightclubs and getting herself into a lot of trouble.
She had to breastfeed Aaron when he was born, which coincided with her education. It was the most difficult time in her life. She couldn't even sit straight throughout imprisonment. Her coursework was rigorous because she had been admitted into a prominent university. She had to catch up on overdue work whenever she had time. On a typical day, she worked part-time while caring for Aaron. Her body was close to crumbling.
She was able to secure a high-paying job after graduating from university, which improved the family's financial status. With her adoptive mother and sister staying at home while she worked, she was terrified Aaron would be treated the same way she was.
Aurora apathetically sneered at her when she initially brought Aaron home. She couldn't get her mind off her calling Aaron a 'little b*stard'. As a result, as soon as she found a job, she moved out of the house with Aaron and rented an apartment for the two of them.
Aaron was sent to kindergarten when she had to work, and he would wait for her at the entrance whenever he was dismissed.
She was relieved that Aaron was a thoughtful child. Despite his youth, he was highly intelligent and rarely wilful. He could now go home without her having to come and get him.
