The kitchens were empty at 9:00 PM. That was the only reason Kade had agreed to Ryn’s bet. “You cheated,” he said, leaning against the doorframe with a smirk. “Werewolves don’t do fair.” Ryn tossed him a roll from the counter without looking up. “Werewolves don’t do quiet either. Yet here you are.” Kade caught it one-handed and bit into it. Still warm. “Point.” The bet had been stupid. First to the kitchens after the council adjourned. Winner got first pick of food, loser had to wash the pans. Kade had won by three seconds, mostly because he’d shifted mid-sprint and used the extra stride. Ryn didn’t seem mad about it. She was sitting on the edge of the prep table, legs swinging, picking at a bowl of stew like she wasn’t hungry but needed something to do with her hands. Three
