CHAPTER 14 — THE SAFE HOUSE

1222 Words
The penthouse was no longer safe. That reality became painfully clear within minutes. Bodyguards flooded every floor. Security alarms continued blaring. Phones rang nonstop. Orders echoed through every room. And in the center of the storm— stood Jeon Jungkook. Cold. Furious. Terrifying. Aarya sat on the couch, wrapped in a blanket someone had draped around her shoulders. Her hands still trembled. Not from the cold. From the memory. The bullet. The shattered glass. The realization that someone had actually tried to kill her. Her stomach twisted. Because for the first time— this wasn't a threat. It wasn't a photograph. It wasn't a warning. Someone had pulled the trigger. Someone wanted her dead. Or worse. Someone wanted to use her against Jungkook. The thought made her glance toward him. Immediately. As if sensing it— his eyes found hers. Across the room. For one brief moment— his expression softened. Then his phone rang. The softness vanished. Instantly. "Talk." The single word made everyone nearby tense. Jungkook listened silently. His jaw tightened. Then tightened further. Dangerously. Finally— he ended the call. The room went silent. Every person present waited. Nobody dared speak first. Aarya's heartbeat quickened. "What happened?" Jungkook looked at her. Then at the shattered window. Then back at her. "We're leaving." The answer came immediately. Final. No room for argument. Unfortunately— Aarya specialized in arguments. "Leaving where?" "A safe house." Her eyebrows furrowed. "No." Several bodyguards visibly stopped breathing. Poor guys. They'd learned by now. When Aarya said no— trouble followed. Jungkook stared at her. Unimpressed. "We're leaving." "I'm not." His eyes narrowed. "Aarya." "No." She stood. Ignoring the dizziness still lingering from the shock. "I'm tired of being moved around." Silence. Dangerous silence. Then— Jungkook crossed the room. Slowly. Deliberately. Like a predator approaching something reckless. Which, to be fair— was exactly what she was. "You were almost shot." His voice was low. Controlled. Far too controlled. Aarya swallowed. But held her ground. "I'm aware." "Clearly not." The sharpness in his tone surprised her. And apparently surprised him too. Because he immediately closed his eyes. Exhaling slowly. As though fighting for patience. When he looked at her again— the anger was gone. Replaced by something worse. Fear. Real fear. "You are coming with me." The words weren't an order anymore. They sounded desperate. And that terrified her. Because Jeon Jungkook wasn't supposed to sound desperate. Ever. Two hours later— they left Seoul behind. The city lights disappeared. Skyscrapers became forests. Roads became winding mountain paths. The drive felt endless. Aarya sat silently beside Jungkook. For once— neither argued. Neither spoke. The events of the night still lingered heavily between them. Eventually— the car stopped. Aarya blinked. Confused. The place before them looked nothing like she'd expected. No mansion. No fortress. No armed compound. Just a beautiful cabin hidden deep within the mountains. Surrounded by trees. Protected by isolation. And strangely— it felt peaceful. "You're kidding." Jungkook stepped out. "No." Aarya stared. "This is the safe house?" "It's one of them." One of them. Of course he had multiple safe houses. Why was she even surprised anymore? The cabin was surprisingly warm inside. Wooden floors. Stone fireplace. Large windows overlooking the forest. Comfortable furniture. A place built for hiding. Not luxury. Not power. Just safety. Aarya found herself relaxing slightly. For the first time all day. Then reality ruined it. "There are only two bedrooms." She looked at Jungkook. Then at the hallway. Then back at Jungkook. His expression remained perfectly calm. The jerk. "Yes." "That's suspicious." His eyebrow lifted. "How?" "You know how." The corner of his mouth twitched. Almost a smile. Almost. That night— sleep refused to come. Aarya lay awake. Staring at the ceiling. Listening to the wind outside. Every time she closed her eyes— she saw the bullet. The shattered glass. The chaos. Eventually— she gave up. Leaving her room quietly. The cabin was dark. Silent. Peaceful. She walked toward the living room. Then froze. Jungkook sat near the fireplace. Alone. A glass of whiskey rested beside him. His gaze remained fixed on the flames. Lost in thought. For a moment— he looked exhausted. Not physically. Emotionally. Like he carried the weight of the world alone. Aarya hesitated. Then slowly approached. Jungkook noticed immediately. Of course he did. "You should be sleeping." She sat on the opposite couch. "You should too." Neither moved. The fire crackled softly between them. Creating a strange sense of intimacy. A dangerous one. After several minutes— Aarya finally asked the question. The one she'd been wondering about for weeks. "Were you always like this?" Jungkook looked up. "What?" "This." She gestured vaguely. "The mafia king thing." A faint smile appeared. Briefly. "No." For some reason— that answer surprised her. "What were you like?" Silence followed. Long silence. Then— he spoke. "My parents died when I was young." Aarya froze. The confession was unexpected. Completely unexpected. Jungkook stared into the fire. "My father built everything." His voice remained calm. Too calm. Like he'd told himself this story countless times. "After they died..." A pause. "The people around me smelled weakness." Something dark flickered behind his eyes. "Some tried to steal what belonged to my family." Another pause. "Others tried to kill me." Aarya's chest tightened. Because suddenly— she understood. Not completely. But enough. The loneliness. The walls. The control. The darkness. None of it had appeared overnight. It had been built. Piece by piece. Pain by pain. Loss by loss. For the first time— she saw the boy beneath the monster. And somehow— that hurt. "You were alone." The words escaped quietly. Jungkook looked at her. Something vulnerable flashed through his eyes. Gone instantly. But she saw it. "Yes." The simple answer shattered something inside her. Because nobody should have sounded that used to being alone. Nobody. The silence stretched. Gentle this time. Not uncomfortable. Not hostile. Just... quiet. The fire reflected in Jungkook's eyes. Making them softer. Warmer. Human. Aarya found herself staring. Again. Unfortunately— he noticed. Again. Their eyes locked. The room suddenly felt smaller. The distance between them felt shorter. The air felt heavier. Neither looked away. Neither wanted to. Slowly— very slowly— Jungkook stood. Walking toward her. One step. Then another. Then another. Until he stopped directly in front of her. Close. Again. Always close. Too close. Aarya's heartbeat raced. Dangerously. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips. Then returned to her eyes. The same look as before. The same impossible tension. The same feeling that neither of them wanted to name. And this time— there was nobody to interrupt. No crowds. No bodyguards. No shattered windows. Just them. And the firelight. A loud explosion echoed outside. The cabin shook violently. The moment shattered instantly. Both jumped to their feet. Jungkook's expression transformed. Predator. Danger. War. Aarya's pulse skyrocketed. "What was that?" Another explosion answered. Closer this time. Much closer. Jungkook grabbed her wrist immediately. Protectively. Urgently. His eyes darkened. "They found us." The words hit like a punch. No. No, no, no. How? The safe house was supposed to be hidden. Impossible to find. Yet somehow— the enemy had found them anyway. And outside— gunfire suddenly erupted through the darkness.
