​The air in the bedroom was charged with a heavy, magnetic stillness that made the tiny hairs on Briar’s arms stand on end. The legal document Victor had pressed into her hand felt like a cold weight against her palm, but the heat radiating from his massive frame was far more pressing. He didn’t back away after their foreheads touched; instead, he closed the final inch of distance, his mouth crashing onto hers with a desperation that was less of a request and more of a conquest. ​Victor’s hands, calloused and steady, moved with a sudden, frantic hunger.
