CHAPTER 12 The sun was barely above the horizon, casting a soft orange glow over all of nature and the buildings, but Amelia was already a few paces ahead, her movements a model of effortless grace. Her breathing was steady, her footfalls a rhythmic metronome against the pavement. Behind her, however, the rhythm was decidedly less graceful. Sterling’s breath came in loud, ragged gasps.
