Chapter 6: The Shadow's Warning

1127 Words
The summons came at midnight, folded into her palm by a maid who wouldn't meet her eyes. Three words, in Cooper's handwriting. War room. Now. Elise didn't bother changing out of her nightclothes. Whatever this was, he wasn't going to care what she wore. The war room sat two levels beneath the guest wing, carved into the same rock that had once sheltered her half-frozen and dying, three years and a lifetime ago. Cooper stood at its center under a single hanging lamp, hands braced flat on a map table covered in troop positions and supply routes she'd helped draw herself. He didn't look up when she entered. "You touched his scar," Cooper said. The words dropped like stones into still water. Elise kept her spine straight, her face carved from the same ice she'd spent three years perfecting. "I was gathering intelligence." "You were shaking." He looked up, and the charm, the warm, easy smile she'd trusted through frostbite and grief and every lesson since was simply gone. What sat underneath was colder than the blizzard that nearly killed her. "I've watched you for three years. I know your face when you're performing. I know it when you're not. That was not a performance." "Careful", Elise said evenly. "You're accusing your own queen of incompetence." "I'm accusing her of forgetting who made her one." The silence stretched thin enough to cut skin. "Do you remember the blood-pact?" Cooper's voice dropped softer, which somehow made it worse. He crossed to her slowly, and for the first time since the storm that saved her life, Elise felt something that resembled fear of him instead of gratitude. "You bled into my palm and told me you wanted him on his knees. Begging." "He is on his knees." Her voice didn't waver. "He has dismantled half his own council. Executed the men who tortured me for a decade. That's the plan working exactly as designed." Cooper studied her, something calculating shifting behind his green eyes. "Convincing," he said finally. "Almost convincing enough to forget it's also exactly what a woman falling for her target would say to buy herself more time." Her pulse spiked. She didn't let it reach her face. "I'm not falling in love with anyone. I'm finishing what you and I started in the snow." She thought he might push further. Instead something in his posture eased, not trust, she realized, watching him close. Recalibration. A predator choosing a different approach. "Fine. We do it your way. Slow. Total collapse from the inside." He turned back to the table, tracing a border route east of the packlands. "But you should know, the second half of the plan is already moving. Contingency. In case your patience runs out before his does." Cold slid through her stomach. "What contingency?" "You don't need the details." He didn't look up. "You just need to know it exists. So whatever softness is growing in that chest of yours", his eyes flicked up, sharp, straight at her heart, "doesn't cost either of us the one thing we came here for." "Which is?" Cooper smiled. It didn't reach his eyes. "His ruin. One way or another. I've waited a long time for it. I'd hate to have to get creative." She didn't remember walking back to her chamber. She remembered the door closing, the lock clicking, and then the mirror, full-length, gilt-edged, mounted in a guest suite too grand for a woman supposedly here only to negotiate borders. Elise stared at her own reflection. Gold eyes dimmed to amber in the low light. Silver-white hair loose around her shoulders. A woman built out of ice and vengeance by a man who, she was only now understanding, had built her as a weapon first and a person second. She pressed her palm flat against her sternum. The bond hummed beneath her skin. Not painful, it hadn't been painful in weeks but warm, insistent and alive in a way three years of training hadn't managed to kill. Every time Alexandre was near, it stirred like something waking from a long, cold sleep. Every time he touched her, it sang. This isn't supposed to be happening. She watched her own reflection like it belonged to a stranger. I came here to burn him. She thought of Cooper's face in the war room. Flat, controlled fury under all that calm. I've already set the second half of the plan in motion. He wasn't going to wait for her heart to catch up with her mission. She understood that now, with a clarity that turned her stomach to ice. Cooper had pulled her from a snowbank and rebuilt her into exactly the weapon he needed and weapons that hesitated got replaced. Whatever was coming, it was coming soon. She had no idea if it would take Alexandre's throne, his life, or both. She closed her eyes, reaching for the vow she'd made in the snow three years ago. Burning, uncomplicated hatred that had carried her through frostbite and grief and every brutal hour since. She couldn't find it anymore. Somewhere between a scar under her fingertips and a man kneeling in the snow to beg for a second chance, the hatred had tangled with something else entirely, and she didn't know how to cut the two apart without cutting herself open too. A sound broke the silence. Knuckles against her chamber door. Soft. Urgent. Careful not to wake the wing. Elise went still. Nobody should have reached this floor without triggering three layers of syndicate security. Nobody except— She crossed the room and pulled the door open. Alexandre stood in the corridor, breathing hard, one hand braced against the doorframe like it was the only thing holding him upright. Blood, fresh, dark and still wet soaked through his shoulder, dripping slowly onto the stone at his feet. A shallow gash cut along his temple. His eyes, when they found hers, were wrecked and stripped of every trace of the Alpha's iron control. "I know I shouldn't be here." His voice was rough, breath fogging in the cold. "I bypassed your security. I know what that costs me if your people catch me. I don't care." He swayed. Elise's hand shot out on pure instinct, catching his good arm before he could go down. "I just needed to see you." Staring at her like she was the only fixed point in a world gone dark. "Just for one second. Before I let myself think about anything else." Behind her, somewhere in the depths of the fortress, a door she hadn't heard close now creaked faintly open. Elise didn't turn to check. She already knew, with a sick, sinking certainty, exactly whose footsteps might be listening in the dark.
