Chapter 3: The Return

817 Words
Three years was enough time to bury a girl and raise a queen in her place. Elise stood at the ridge overlooking BloodMoon territory, wind pulling her silver-white hair back like a banner. She felt nothing that resembled fear. Fear belonged to the girl who used to flinch at raised voices. That girl died in a snowbank three winters ago. What replaced her had learned to make other things flinch instead. "Ready?" Cooper asked, low, just for her. Elise flexed her fingers. A thin curl of gold-lit heat licked across her knuckles, controlled now, a leash she'd spent three years learning to hold. "Let them look," she said. "Let them remember exactly what they threw away." Behind them, an army waited. Not rogues but a disciplined force in matte-black armor with silver insignia catching the weak winter light. Cooper's syndicate had grown teeth these past three years. Elise had sharpened every single one of them herself. Midnight silk. Silver-threaded armor that moved like water, forged from a design no BloodMoon smith had ever seen. Spine straight. Chin level. Nothing about the woman descending that ridge remembered how to grovel. The sentries saw them first. "Pack positions…" one started, reaching for his radio. His voice died in his throat. The woman at the front of the column was looking at him, and something about her gaze made his wolf whimper and flatten low without his permission. Gold eyes. Not amber, not brown. Gold, bright and endless, the kind of gold elders once used to frighten pups into obedience. "That's" the second sentry's face drained the color of old snow. "That's not possible." "BloodMoon." Elise didn't raise her voice. It carried anyway, pressing directly against the base of every skull within a hundred feet. "Open your gates. Your Alpha has an old debt to pay." Nobody moved to stop her. Nobody could. Word tore through the compound like fire through dry brush. She's back. The Alpha's rejected omega is back. Look at her. Look at what she is now. Wolves who had once shoved past Elise without a glance pressed flat against walls as she passed, eyes down, throats bared on pure instinct. The ancient response to something that had climbed far above them on a food chain they hadn't known existed until this exact moment. A woman in emerald silk, older now and thinner froze in the courtyard, her hand flying to her mouth. Elise looked at her. Just looked. She didn't slow her stride. She didn't blink. The woman's knees buckled. She sat down hard in the snow, shaking. Cooper's hand settled at the small of Elise's back, warm and possessive, playing his part flawlessly for every watching eye. The devoted partner, the co-ruler, half of an unbreakable throne. To the pack, they looked exactly like what they wanted BloodMoon to believe: two sovereigns arriving to negotiate. Or conquer. Or both. Only Elise felt how tightly his fingers pressed into her spine. Like he was afraid, even now, that she might bolt before the trap sprang shut. She didn't. She wanted this. Every step of it. They stopped in the central courtyard. The same courtyard where, three years ago, she'd been dragged past on her way to the blizzard, blood freezing on her lips. The packhouse doors stood twenty feet ahead. Firelight glowed behind tall windows. Somewhere inside, panic was surely already climbing through the ranks toward the one man whose reaction mattered. Elise waited. She'd learned, these three years, that queens didn't chase. Queens arrived, and let the world scramble to catch up. The great doors slammed open. He was taller than she remembered or maybe she'd simply remembered him wrong, remembered him smaller, safer, something she could have survived without consequence. Black hair. The same jagged scar at his collarbone, pale in the winter light. Slate-grey eyes flecked with gold, the eyes that had once looked down at her from a throne and found her unworthy. Alexandre Vance took one stride forward, powerful and certain, every inch the Alpha who'd never once doubted his own crown. Then his eyes found her. He stopped so fast his second-in-command nearly collided with his back. Every trace of color drained from his face. The girl he'd rejected in front of three hundred witnesses, the fragile, broken thing he'd cast into a blizzard without a second thought was gone. In her place stood something that dropped his wolf to its knees inside his own chest. Twenty-eight years old, and it had never once bowed to anything. Gold eyes locked onto his. Alexandre Vance, Alpha of BloodMoon, finally understood. Three years, one blizzard, and one throne too late exactly what he'd thrown away. His mate. His equal. A queen born from a bloodline his pack hadn't seen walk the earth in five hundred years. A Sun-Moon queen, the kind his ancestors used to kneel to before the old dynasties fell.
